The population density in the county where I live is about 2.5 per square mile (don't know what a km is). Our ranch covers an area of several sq. miles, so that would make the pop density in our area less than about .5 people and 1 dog per sq. mile. That's just about right for me.

I'd rather be in a colder climate post SHTF than a hot humid bug infested tropical island that has more chance of being overrun by unfriendly natives. There are no poisonous bugs or snakes in Alaska, seafood and game is abundant and it's much easier to keep food fresher longer as many islands also have glaciers, which make great ice boxes. I'm glad that most of the world's population live in more temperate areas, less competition.
Agreed, might be ok in the summer but winters are just too harsh. We're not talking just uncomfortable cold but life and death cold. Artic pointed out the abundance of resources and lack of population, but that's due to it being so hard to live there!
That's the big misconception about Alaska. Many areas along the coast are quite mild, especially SE Alaska. In a post SHTF world where modern medicine may not be available, I'd gladly take a cooler winter over a hot humid area that has a much higher risk of disease and infection.
Very true on the infection thing. Even bacteria don't like the cold. The beauty of both Western Canada and Alaska is undeniable, and in theory it would make a great place to be in shtf. Maybe if I was younger and had more energy to chop wood....
Yeah, kind of wish I was out further too. Eleven years ago when I built this place there weren't many houses here. Now there's more houses than wooded lots.

yes originally there were only 12 houses in my immediate location, that was up to the 70s, then more were built, in about 3 phases I think, the house I live in was built in the mid 90s.
