Back in the day all the people I knew, that burned incense, were covering up what they were really burning.

I used to keep some in my custom (by me) van. Those were the days.

burned incense was used for the Gods, like candles in Christian churches today.
You can not eat it, but it could be a trade item, with some people.

A lot of them like Myrrh were also medicinal.

Some will never understand what times were like. I was probably the last generation to have great times. I miss the early 80's so bad. I do wish I could go back and stay.

What happens in the 60s n 70s stays in the 60s, 70s.

Word to the wise......
Sometimes there may be people with health problems that you have no knowledge of.
But in some scents of incense will trigger seizures.
Just saying......
But other than that, I agree with Spike driver, they were just trying to cover up bad body order and weed.
But to each his or her own.
