Somebody mentioned Vaseline. I forgot about that. We used it on livestock wounds. I saw a goal with a four inch wide flap of skin torn off and the muscle exposed on his shoulder. Wound was dressed multiple times daily with Vaseline and never got infected...

Spike we may want to keep some on hand in our preps, huh? The stuff works somehow.
Hubbys mom had nice skin and she said it was the vasiline she used on her face and neck .

@Sourdough keep in mind that epsom salts is magnesium sulfate, not salt at all, but I agree with many others here, that epsom salt mixed with water and soaking injured area at least twice a day might do the trick. Sounds like there are a couple of areas you might need to stock up on.
Also salt, as some mentioned. I know when the ocean used to be cleaner, I could spend a few days at the beach and it would heal up any of my cuts or open wounds. Wow, no, it wasn't that bad but I wasn't always so careful. LOL
I have used neosporin on my cuts after they start hurting a little and the skin around the injury starts turning red. Not a usual occurence for me until I started working in a place that is more like a cultured petri dish.
Sorry for your injury.

As mentioned above clean and use raw honey. If you don't have raw honey make a short dam around the wound with the store fake honey, vaseline, etc and fill with white sugar. Use a clean bandage. The dam and bandage are used to hold the sugar in place.

A little off topic but I recall sugar being used to heal bedsores, years ago.

Sorry for your injury.

I am not injured.......and have not been sick with a cold or any flu in 35 years. Never even had a broken bone.......interesting as I have crashed three airplanes, two motorcycles, two trucks and one car.......OK three trucks. Been shot a few times, but no broken bones.

I will let @DrPrepper come and educate us all.

LOL, Sentry,
I think people have given some good advice here already. My answer to wounds is soap and water, rinse well, and keep clean. I don't use antibiotic ointment unless the wound is already infected or is really high risk. I only use peroxide on grossly infected wounds or extremely dirty wounds. Peroxide needs to be diluted significantly to prevent killing new skin cells ("granulation tissue"). I cover wounds when needed to keep clean, but minor cuts, scratches, etc, I leave open to air (once bleeding stops!)

We need to be really careful with self-diagnosing and using antibiotics- not all antibiotics can or should be used for all wounds, and it can open you up to other problems. Allergic reactions can be lethal, but you can also develop a diarrhea disease called Clostridioides difficile (C diff) due to overuse of antibiotics.

Do not happy heavy , more is not better.
Very thin coating allows air to work the ointment.

Jim

I will likely never ever use any of it. But I have 40 some backpacks. Yes, not a miss'statement, forty some backpacks. About half are fully stocked with survival supplies and cached in 17 steel drums around the wilderness. Then about five are here at the main cabin or in near by trapline cabins. They get used the most and have the most standby medical supplies. So I need a lot of medical supplies, even if I never use them.
