I believe that questioning authority can be a good thing.

Having something of a Jewish background, the phrase "I was following orders..." does not sit well with me, or work as an excuse for doing things that ones knows are wrong.

I've actually been in this situation as a paramedic, and I don't compromise on my oath or my professional ethics.

It comes down to submitting to the greater authority, you can question the lesser authority. My preacher says that any preacher who does not answer to someone should be watched carefully. They must be responsible to authority, to those who are also under authority and so on. To God basically.

I disagree about the corporal punishment thing, but I sense that this is a topic that we may never agree on.

I'm actually a peaceful person, and have always believed that violence in any form is a last resort...especially inside of a family.

When we had a prison contract for EMS services, the common theme that keeps coming up again and again with every hardened criminal is that it begins with parental beatings, and usually drugs and/or alcohol in the house.

I see kids with parents from places like Haiti and Jamaica (where they beat their kids incessantly...it's part of the culture) that don't--as a whole--do well in school.

I don't like the idea of sending a message to a young child that violence is a way to solve problems, and I don't like the idea of kids growing up in an atmosphere of chronic fear.

I completely stopped talking to my family because of issues about emotional abuse, let alone hitting.

The key here is that abuse is wrong and detrimental.

Assaulting a child with a weapon and corporal punishment done properly aren't the same. I think that is what the basic disagreement is about. But I could be wrong.

We--as adults--may know the difference, but I don't expect a child to understand the difference.

A common factor in bullying at school is that these kids are often (not always) beaten at home, so they emulate this behavior at school.

How many Catholic (sorry if I offend anyone) priests have been implicated in sexual abuse of children?

I hear parents tell their children all the time to "Do what Father Thomas wants you to do, and don't backtalk him or you'll get the belt...do you hear me?"

How many molestations happen because kids aren't supposed to question authority?

I believe that--deep down--child molesters are cowards because they're afraid of a real woman. An assertive kid is a turn-off to a pedophile, and I would want my kids to know that respect for authority has limits and that they should question certian things. These dirtbags tend to groom children over time until they slip past the kid's defenses. Kids also tend to believe that they caused the situation because the molester gets them all turned around inside.

And--if you think it's only the Catholic church--guess again. I was working on an ambulance too long to believe that. Families often collaborated with the molesters to bury things, and shift blame to the child (for the greater good of the church and community).

A lot of these consequences can be avoided if children knew to question certian things.

Skepticism of authority can be a good thing in its proper contex...even in children.

I agree. I only was throwing a point out there about kids respecting authority.

I know very little about the Catholic Church . Its way to organized and structured for Me . Thats how this stuff gets buried . It seems more tradition based and a religious system than Faith based Christianity .
But I guarantee You more kids are abused by drunks snd druggies in their own home than in any kind of institution .

I don't disagree.

I read an article about how a music teacher was arrested because a kid threw a basketball at his face and broke his glasses. He grabbed the kid, the kid struggled, and then the music teacher threw a punch.

It escalated into a classroom brawl.

Skepticism of authority doesn't mean having a street fight with your teacher.

I agree, but only the teacher is getting charged. It happened in California. It was on CNN.

I expect the kid was underage, should have charged his parents with the cost of replacement glasses.

The teacher got more than $80,000.00 in donations for his legal fees from the Internet.

its not just the catholic church, plenty of protestant clergy are at it too.

Most of the U.S doesn't have the types of organized Protestant Churches You see in the U.K or the Orthodox Churches One could find in Eastern Europe . Especially when you get away from the urban areas. A Baptist or Presbyterian Church here nay have the Preacher and a couple People to help Him . No big structure and the Preacher probably has a full time job at a factory . The building may be empty except for Sunday and Wednesday . No Child care other than a Sunday school class in a side room when the serious preaching begins that may be a little too adult and loud for the Kids . Also most Protestant Churches have incorporated modern best practices due to the legal problems faced by the school and Churches structured like the Catholics.

no, lonely isn't in my vocabulary, its the way I am, the way I was brought up, I don't like people much I prefer animals to people, and I like peace and quiet and being on my own. its people that piss me off...big time.
