I can be very polite and friendly to people in everyday life, but that doesn't mean I would trust them. For me, it's just easier in life to rely on myself than others. Way too much can and has happened. In survival situation, yes people will band together for the good of the cause, but ultimately, it will come down to survival of the fittest if drawn out. Starvation along with other things, especially if it happens to ones kids will make a person desperate. You just never know what a person's trigger may be.
At my regular job we just hired a young girl. About 4 to 5 months pregnant, with a 1 yr or so at home as well. She was as polite and sweet as can be, and talked about her daughter being the love of her life. She was fired for stealing within three weeks and escorted out in handcuffs. I never saw that comming. I think I'm an ok judge of character normally, but that really thru me. I guess the moral here is thieves and rotten people don't always look the part. She was the proverbial wolf in sheeps clothing.

My long-time friends are aware of my prepper mentality, but it isn't something I share with others readily. Since we're on a ranch, our preps are really considered "typical" and what one expects when going to one (like chickens, horses, garden, etc.)

but unfortunately the farm/ranch homestead would be a target, at least mine if I was not prepared. My thought would be, be as far away from town as possible.

I agree, farms and homesteads would quickly become known as potential places for food after shtf. My wife was against an AR, but when things get bad with the economy it will be a good investment.
