Except they didn't belong to the Soviet Union prior to the Red Revolution...trade partners yes, but, not part of Russia.Typical "Lib Logic" no different than that employed by modern Democrats.
The other regions suffered because Ukraine was the breadbasket of the Soviet Union and their drop in production due to the Holodomor (dead farmers can't farm, DUH!) affected the food supply for the whole of the Soviet Union.
Let me clarify...the third partition of Poland divided the control of what is now Ukraine between Astria/Hungary and Russia creating a zone called Galicia which was the western half of modern day Ukraine....prior to the partitions, almost all of it was "Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth" (as was a good chunk of modern day Belarus, Crimea and Russia). The Fourth Partition was Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact just to add more confusion.

My mother, an ethnic Pole, was born in present day Ukraine…it was under the control of Austria-Hungary at the time which had been annexed by Hitler and then the family fled before it was taken by the Russian army during WWII…so she always said to me “What am I by birth? German? Austrian? Hungarian? Russian? Ukrainian? Polish? Doesn't matter now. I am American.” (she always got offended when asked where she was from because of her accent).
What historically “belongs” to which country in that region is very complex. It is why present borders matter or there will be constant claims of one against another.
