I have 3 dogs that stays outside, they watch over the live stock, us and the property. They are working dogs not pets in other words they are the buffer, think of them as the sacrificial lamb, don't get me wrong, I would protect them the best I could but they have a job to do. The dogs are rotties, I do have a pet/working dog that hunts with me and my damn hemorrhoid, it is a brittany gun dog. My wife has a doberman strictly an indoor guard dog or when she is on the road by herself. Living out in the Country a working dog is invaluable and a must have.

That's what I'm worried a dog out here would be. A sacrifice. Maybe it is still in my best interest!

I suppose I would need a reason for it to be working. We have no livestock or farm, just a medium sized garden that will be enclosed to prevent deer.

It would be nearly impossible for the kids to avoid attachment to the animal.

I would suggest getting two large dogs if you live somewhere with badgers. This will help ensure the canines survive a badger encounter. Badgers have been known to kill even large dogs in altercation.

About two years ago, I heard an awful noise outside and it was my old dog Marvis in a life and death struggle with a badger. I grabbed my Barrrett M82 that I keep loaded at all times but it was too hard to get a good shot without accidentally hitting Marv. After a few seconds they separated and I laid into the badger and blew it to ****. Marvis didn't make it, and ever since then I have a two dog rule in case of badger attacks.
