Hello everyone,

I'm Jen, and new to the forum. My husband and I are in search of some land, unrestricted for building and minimum of 5 acres. We want to start our own homestead. We are currently in Tennessee, but are looking in other states as well. If anyone has any land for sale, or knows anyone with land for sale, please forward the info. We are looking to buy but are open for a rent to own option as well.

Welcome, Jen!

You have started a thread which has been on my mind for a long time!

I have been searching for land to purchase for years, decades. I do not make decisions like this quickly. I also know that you almost have to be right there where the land is to purchase it.

I am a native of South Dakota. I have looked at real estate listings by realtors there. Many have a "request" to purchase land along with their listings.

don't get discouraged if you don't find anything right away. We did what you want to do but with more land ( been in our homestead for over 8 years now) and it took us about 5 years ( we did have regular jobs at the time) of searching and looking to find this.
If you want some details on how we did it I can post them

Welcome.. we sold everything and moved to montana from washington state. Best thing we have done and we are never moving back.
We moved with a travel trailer and searched and talked to everyone....the relators were the least helpful.
Unless you are rural it might be a good time to get rural and rent right now...There is a storm coming.

Jen, first off welcome. As to your question about buying land to me I think your looking at it backwards. First off you should figure out what state you want to settle in. Research taxes, weather & everything else that you can think of. Once you have a state or two as options then you research areas in that state (cost of land etc.). Then go there & spend some time, a week or so at least. Find out if there are drawbacks that you hadn't heard about or thought of. Then you start looking for land to buy.

There are also websites that let you look up info on towns/cities nearby. You can check all kinds of demographics and weather info etc. For the life of me i cannot remember them right now. That and landwatch are how we found our little red island in a sea of blue in Oregon. Good luck and be patient. We managed to not make any costly mistakes so far.

I think Old tex has a point. Don't move to a desert if you want to live on rainwater etc.
