I have an old New Holland 256 Rolabar rake that I hope to restore...but more immediately...I am replacing a dog spring and cannot figure out how on God's Green Earth to get the cotter pin through the hole in the rivet that holds the dog and its spring in the hub assembly. There just doesn't seem enough room to get the pin through the hole enough to bend it.

The second issue is the pin itself is impossible to bend. It is a correct new part for holding the rivet in place. Not sure why New Holland would have sold me cotters that cannot be bent. (I think it can be done if the pin is heated up, but I don't have tools to do that and it still doesn't solve the issue of getting the pin through the rivet where it exits on the back side of the hub assembly.

Anyone who's worked with these...I'd definitely appreciate your insight. It's the only thing keeping me from returning the equipment to service. Thanks in advance.

If you can't bend the cotter pin they may have given you a hardened roller chain pin by mistake, th NH parts book doesn't show a cotter pin for that assembly, if it is the drivewheel dog

Thank you. I don't have the parts book in front of me but think I noticed the same thing...so I wonder how NH held things together without a cotter, there. It's a really tight spot to put a pin into, given the dimensions of the area where the pin would have to be inserted.
