From listening to the news, this new strain occurs mostly in elderly rehab centers and long term care facilities. Do you think the CDC is just hyping it up or should we all be on alert?

On a side note, this new virus just looks nasty (not that any one virus looks good).

Hype ,
Norovirus and its cousin sapovirus, same old gastroenteritis that they always were, maybe just a little worse than last year or maybe just a little more advertised..................... The CDC is a govt. agency (keep the people in fear ,its the communist way.)........ the worst problem is still MRSA.

Like with almost everything else, wash your hands good, don't put things in your mouth, and wear gloves if your skin is compromised. You would be amazed at the crud we'd get going through the mental hospital I worked at and it would take forever to get rid of it because none of the people in there would follow directions and wash.

I have hand sanitizer in my car.

I do the same thing, and when the supermarket wipes are empty I complain at the customer service desk.

I have a hate on for hand sanitizer. It's just me and I know it. The only thing I use it for is to start a fire.

Soap and water. If I have a break in the skin on my hands and I'm dealing with bodily fluids, I use latex gloves over a bandage. That's if I'm doing something medical or food prep. Now if I'm just out shopping or whatever, I'll bandage over a cut and go on. Your skin is an effective and reliable barrier to damn near everything. Overuse of the hand sanitizers and all that stuff is one of the things that I believe cause so many people to get sick nowadays. We no longer build up the immunities like we did years ago. People are so worried about a germ being on them that they kill off the healthy bacteria that our bodies need.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox now. :)

Exactly, in order for your body to become immune to any virus it must be exposed to it ( naturally being the best way vs vaccination) without that exposure in public to the germs your body's immune system doesn't get stronger. It's like when you condition your muscles you have to work them consistently, your imune system is the same way.

yea, soap and water is # 1 but not always at hand, and most public restrooms (to wash your hands )are a risk of epic proportions............sanitizer is conveniant ...........vaccination is just too scary, Ive seen multiple cases of Guillien Barre post vaccination and there are plenty of arguments concerning autism and other adverse reactions.

I live in NYC where the subway cares are hobos living rooms. Many a time you rush to catch a train and say sweet, this car is has room in it for me to sit down, WRONG. The first thing that hits you is the stench of urine and feces because the homeless man defecated on himself and he is using the bench as his bed.

Now you'd think it would be illegal for someone to smell so bad that it gags you at 10 ft, but no, they equate it with someone wearing too much perfume so they can't be removed from the car. I am a libertarian at heart and believe that everyone can do anything they want as long as it doesn't interfere with anyone else's right. Well that 10 ft. bubble of stank qualified as interference in my book.

So yeah... I live in a nasty germ ridden city but I don't view it as a immediate bad thing. The subway cars are filled millions of people holding the same metal poles for balance, many of which don't wash their hands and carry nastiness around with them, and then eat fast food without washing. Gross huh?

Ever read the book "Guns, Germs, and Steel"? I think it is a pretty racist book, but it equates European Caucasian dominance to our resistance to viruses and germs because of our urban living. We live so close to each other in such filthy environments that it makes us germ and virus resistant. I can attest to that because on my first patrol in Baghdad the first thing I ordered was some street food knowing that I would probably get the runs but I wanted to condition my body to the environment. Guess what, through out the whole tour I was the only one who never got any illness from eating bad food. Hurray for living in nyc!
