When you think about it though, it's a great, untraceable crime (as far as the loot goes). Just melt it down and recast it, and completely untraceable.

I have a feeling that the guards are still being interrorigated, and some info will come out soon. Luckily most crooks aren't too smart. You're right though, once melted, it's untracable. Why in the heck wasn't a truck with that kind of value escorted!

Maybe normally it would have been...but...inside job and all......

Well, I guess it is what one might be able to call official. Just heard on the news that the authorities think is was an inside job. Although, the loot is still at large.

The truck was secured with a Masterlock. Yep...the kind you can get at any hardware store. No "mechanical" problem was found with the truck, but the guards said they smelled gas & started getting sick, so they pulled off the road. The armed guards exited the truck without their sidearms, or any weapon at all and that's where they encountered the robbers. The thieves were nice enough to use orange cones around the truck while they offloaded the gold bars. Ya know.....all about some traffic control.

Really nice of them to be so helpful to the partners, I mean criminals.

of course its an inside job, nothing mentioning about the transport truck having a GPS? if so, know one monitoring the vehicle movement and that of making a unscheduled stop? Red flags are all over this story!

On another note; "He said the bars are laced with a chemical to help identify them if they are melted down"

And any slightly skilled smelter could easily counter that. Not to mention, they'll likely go offshore with the gold, so no real checking of it will occur.

A masterlock? Exiting without sidearms? What? Ridiculous. Simple solution...just tag every one of those guards, see who they contact for their cut, and problem solved.

My understanding to melt or use chemicals to melt or wash wouldn't work since it changes the atomic number essentially making it slightly radioactive, the chemicals are a natural Isotopes that is molded in gold bars used in countries gold holdings.

Intriguing. Seems that would impact the purity and value though.

No, it doesn't impact price giving that gold isn't truly pure, gold bullion bars can and does hover in between 350-438.9 ounce giving purity down to 99.5% (350 oz and 430) bottom purity, 99.99 (400-438.9) top purity so adding natural isotopes isn't going to affect weight/price ;)
