Seriously, if you unload six shots into someone's chest, I don't think it matters much if it's a 9mm or 380.

Obviously not but that's not my concern. In a threatening man with a gun situation it is unlikely that the threat will be carrying anything smaller than a full sized handgun. Average 9mm full sized handgun holds 15 to 18 rounds. I don't know about u but I don't know if I'd want to draw on someone if I'm outgunned with pocket pistol. I'd much rather give up any replaceable materialistic item he is after...including ur pocket pistol...wink wink.
It took me three shots to zero this toy in. I'm pretty confident at 25ft. I agree that a confrontation is the last thing I want, but if forced into not one I never want to be unarmed. Under armed is ok, but never unarmed.
I've owned firearms pretty much my entire adult life. Never once robbed or threatened, knock on wood. Ive traveled quite a bit around the world...never any serious issues. After a while I just didn't feel the need to carry as much as I used to. I really don't have any reason to venture to bad parts in town. I don't have any enemies. Granted at home/work never far from one and i'm all for carrying...just not a major concern.
I go in some bad areas around Atlanta that warrant carrying. I've always thought though that it is mostly luck in life as to where you are and when. Bad timing in the wrong place at the wrong time, or being delayed and missing that plane that went down. There's a lot of randomness in life. I still think of ccw as I do with all my prepping. I like having tools available to help out if I need them, but still hope I won't ever need them.

I don't always carry a firearm, but I do always have one within reach. I seldom go near any large city so I'm not too worried about coming across any bad guys. I keep a firearm close by for other reasons. For example, last week my daughter in-law hit an elk with her pickup truck. It did a lot of damage to her truck but didn't kill the elk. She didn't have a gun with her at the time so she had to wait for someone to come by and put the animal down. She did end up with half the meat though.

I almost always have a weapon in the truck,CCW I don't worry about it to much if you watch where you go and pay attention to what is going on around you,usually you can leave before things go bad,,,I have done that a few times,,,,you just need to be able to read body language it can save your big butt
I agree with you 100% about the luck component. I believe for me the key component is knowing your surroundings. A few people here are terrified of cities. For me the part of city/suburb I spend most of my time is extremely safe and nothing ever really happens here.
If I were going to an unfamiliar area or even out in middle of nowhere...I would likely be armed.
If you're familiar with your area regardless of were that is you're likely more comfortable.
One of the appeals of country life for me is gun culture normalization. It's nothing for people to be openly carrying or have shotgun in their truck in certain parts of the country. Parts of rural Illinois are like this and I'm all for that.
People here are conditioned to keep that to yourself. Guns are mere tools like anything else and should be treated as such.
I also believe if it's your time to go it's your time and no gun is likely to save you. If you're at the wrong place at the wrong time that could be it.
This is why I don't drive around aimlessly or hang out around rough areas unless I have reason to. I always have a purpose.
Even if I'm traveling overseas I follow the grey man approach and try to adapt to environment. Carrying a big backpack and wearing bright gym shoes in a European city is not adviced.

I have several guns in a few calibers (20 gauge, .38 special, .22 Long Rifle, 9mm Parabellum, .45ACP, .308/7.62 NATO, 5.56mm NATO/.223), and am looking to add .30-.30, 12 gauge, .380 ACP, .300 Win. Mag, and 7.62 × 39 Soviet, and .40 S&W.
I will want to increase my odds of utilizing ammo that falls into my hands post SHTF.
A gun with no ammo is an expensive club.

I have mixed feelings about trading booze to others for goods.
Do I want anyone knowing I even have booze?
Needy people are desperate people. Giving them liquor makes them drunken desperate people.
I'm diabetic and can't drink alcohol anyway and in a shtf situation I want to maintain a
clear head.
Just my 2 cents on that subject.

I also have a 30-30, 12 bore, .300 Win Mag., 5.56, in the form of a Ruger SR556. It's Ruger"s
AR-15.
I also have a Remington R-25 ( I think that's the model #). a 7.62/.308 and a number of
others most notable the very useful .22 r.f. and 15,000 rounds of ammo. Soon to be
50,000 rounds of ammo.
I'd like to get a bolt action in .308........just 'cause.
I've taken deer with the .300 Win mag and it slaps 'em down right now.
So does my lever action 45-70 though at closer ranges.
Did I mention I'm a trained police sniper?
Never killed anyone and glad of it.
Can't really demonize liquor though, The many usefulness outweighs risks, as a sterilizer it will last longer than rubbing alcohol and iodine tincture, makes for an excellent mouth wash, emergency fuel. It also has health benefits and makes for some great recipes. If anyone chooses to get drunk I will already be long gone given I won't barter on my home front to strangers. Anything anyone barters with is a risk in a SHTF.
I'm not against the drinking alcohol for survival purposes, I'm against it for me.
Just my 2 cents and it's a personal choice is all it is.
