This thread is to move the side discussion from the Sutherland Springs Church murders to a stand-alone topic.

I agree that there are plenty of people in chronic pain that benefit from often-addictive drugs.

What I do not understand is the widespread "need" for drugs for huge parts of the population. Not just youth, but for the massive 'mentally ill' segment. Again, as others said, I didn't see anyone in my youth taking drugs. Is it that genetically we're falling apart? Is it that chemicals in foods or the environment are changing us? I know these aren't simple questions.

But so few people 50 years ago were mentally 'sick'. Today a huge part of the homeless are mentally ill. In fact I think the numbers are so large that our society is at risk over it.

I don't have any answers, but this topic is well worth a thread. I just didn't want to side-track the other thread.

I wondered why why so many people have these types of issues? have no answers but I believe it to be environmental including process foods, it's not one specific source but the dynamic of combined sources. These problems have been going on before the internet, it really come the light in the 80s when Utah was handing out Prozac like candy to school kids before ritalin become the drug of choice.

Problem since the 80s early 90s when psychologist started influencing medical care changing everything about medicine!

mental issues have been here since the dawn of human time,we have prolly become better in finding those these days.
perhaps it's better to give a pill than elecrticute someone, though electric therapy is still used, with quite good results occasinally.

no,we don't have the same **** you have on that side of the pond with pain meds, mainly 'cause our doctors are so cautious in prescribeing
those pills and the control is fairly fool proof;prescriptions are made electronically here,so it makes alot harder
for someone to missuse it.

Some what off topic, but I saw a 60 minutes show the other day that showed where the DEA was having hard time cracking down on pharmaceutical companies that make narcotics. Pharmaceutical companies got legislation passed that restricts the DEA on what they can do. They pointed out in the show that one company delivered 11 million narcotic pills (over the course of 5 years) to a small town (25K) in West Virginia to a pharmacy for dispensing. The DEA knows about it, but they can't really do anything legally. I think doctors are too quick to prescribe it. Too many chemicals in our livestock, food, water etc. I also think our lives are more complex. When people worked hard and had to spend time doing things just to maintain their everyday lives, there was less time to be crazy.
