I’ll play!

Let’s see for Cats… All were window toss kittens when I found them. All were outside cats on the farmstead.

“It”. First mouser I ever had, looked like Morris the cat. Don’t remember exactly how it got the name but it worked out well. Anyone would come to my place, yell out “Where is It?” and the cat would come running for attention then run off back into the woods to wherever it is that it went.

Sam and Eule. They came as a pair one morning when I woke up and saw two lumps in the road. Again, no idea how they got those names but it worked out fine. Go out back and call “Samule!” and the pair would come running from out of nowhere. The two were inseparable and you would never see one without the other, like book ends.

Patty. Guys will know this story. New girlfriend wanted a cat and didn’t much like having outside cats. Brought a kitten home and it tuned into the lap cat. Her lap of course. If it ever came over to me my lab would just keep pushing it with its nose until it left my area. It put up with the dog, and the dog put up with the cat. Not near as much fun as any of my other cats as they would all play together. I inherited it when she left.

Dogs. I have had 3 female black labs. First one was “Sweetheart”. She was 10 weeks old when she found me. A friend had the runt of a litter left and the pup took a liking to me, so I took it home. For a few days it was just “the Pup”. Then, at one party everyone exclaimed what a Sweetheart she was, it stuck. Worked out well too. She really was a sweetheart, loved everyone, smarter than she should have been and lived up to her name.

“Wendy” was next in line. She found me after I got through picking at a party. I had just moved to NC and a friend had told them about Sweetheart. I had dug her hole a year or so before that. Seems they knew someone who had a litter recently and had one black gal left. The pup took a liking to me so off we went together. That little thing whinned! It was the noisiest pup I have ever seen. Whinned, grunted, snorted… Always had to be making some sort of noise. Only thing that would stop it is if I got on the floor and it could rest against me. Yeah, I tried to find a workaround but she was destined to be a Velcro Lab. “Wendy Whinner” was her official name, from the SNL skits.

I was missing a companion after digging a hole for Wendy. I put out word and got a reply that someone had a little black gal. It was a miserable day when I went to see the pup, cloudy, drizzling, cold.. I pulled in and this little fat black thing does the puppy wobble over to me. Brightened up my day it did! Greeted her with a “Hey there Sunshine!” I took it home and stopped off at the vets to have it looked over. They asked me for a name and having just lost Wendy I thought Methuselah would be fitting. Ya know, she would get older and I could go “Come on Methuselah..” Well, the young techs there refused to put that down as its name. “You can’t name such a cute puppy with something like that!” They started coming up with young gal names... Blackie, CutiePie.. stuff like that. I thought on it and decided it couldn’t have a basic name so thought back to when I first saw the pup. I told the techs, “I got mmmm <point to pup> on a cloudy day.” I got some puzzled looks and tried again. I picked the pup up, put her on my shoulder and said “I’ve got mmm mm <point to pup> on my shoulder”. Still nothing.. I forget what the next hint was, but it hit them. And “Sunshine” was written in her permanent record. It worked out well. She was a ray of sunshine for me.

I am companionless at the moment, but looking forward to my next challenge. I’m pretty sure I will be needing an assistance dog in the near future and would like to train a pup before I get to where I need her help. As with all my others, when I am ready, one will find me and she will find her own name.

I have 1 Australian Cattle Dog named Sunny - which describes her temperment. One Mastiff/Pitt mix named Matilda - hugable and loveable to women and kids but wary of men. One 15 year old tabby cat named Rowdy. Quiet, low maintenance, claims me and my recliner as his own. A 10 year old peach tortoiseshell cat named Grace - picky when it comes to people....loveable to me but comes off as having PMS to others. Lol!!! Doesn't like strangers and has the dogs buffalowed. PLAYS with mice - I still have to buy mouse traps. Also have a 20 lb Sulcata tortoise named Mr. Lilley. He WAS just named LILY until my granddaughter discovered it was a BOY a couple years ago. He is 7 years old now.

Presently, a 10 year old white lab mix, Daisy, rescue that chose my youngest son. Then there is a 2 year old mountain cur mix, his name is Milo, he's my oldest son's bud. Then there are 2 cats, rescues of course. A black cat with a white stripe diwnhis back named, Pepe Lepue. He has a stub nose face and drools. Lastly, Rudy the Rooster, he is an orange tabby kinda.

Pepe Lepue! LOL Good one!

My dog is Joe. Critters here on the farm get a one syllable name that can be shouted easily and carry’s well on a windy day or through the woods. I take the practical approach. :)
When I was on the farm raising livestock, everything was named. I used the first letter of the momma's name to name her offspring so I could easily trace maternal lines without papers. The naming got tough once I built the flock to 75 ewes!

When I was a kid,all my dogs were named Susie Q! Boy/girl it didn't matter. The only way my mama could get a dog to play with me was to tie a pork chop around my neck! On a farm dogs were always disappearing for some reason. We had a coyote problem so that may be what happened.
Now I have Otie. From some cartoon Lilo and Otus(I think). Granddaughters named him. He was a stray or dumped dog that showed up at my daughter's house. SIL was gonna take him to the pound but I took him. SIL didn't like Otie digging holes in his yard! He's a Blue/Red Heeler mix.

Lots of heelers in TX. It is said that they are very good watch dogs. Don't reach your hand on to that pick up truck while the heeler is on it. He'll take your hand off; that's what I've heard. They can seem very aloof and disinterested when out with owners but you cannot threaten the owner or the property. I think that is without the training too. Awesome dogs. Yours just is grateful to have a home. Does he act ferocious ever?
Guys take their dogs out with them all over the place. In the warmer weather it is very common to see at least one dog in nearly every truck.

48 years back I had a Shepherd Elkhound mix named Stash who got into mine ( 1 oz ) and ate all but stems and seeds. He was one stoned dog and funny as all get out. I was much more careful after that.

My sis gave dad a heeler years ago. It was the dumbest dog I’ve ever seen. He would stand in the rain and bark at rain drops splashing into puddles. :D He didn’t last very long. I think a log truck got him. He wasn't smart enough to stay out of the highway either.
But you see, that doesn't mean all heelers are dumb. That sounds like a weird dog. My dog is funny weird too and part heeler.

He might beat you to death with his tail if he thought you wanted to pet him. I've been working with him since I got him. I can pick up a stick or garden hose now without him cringing down.
I would love to meet his previous owner! He might make a meal out of me but I'd get a sammich out of him!! I can't tolerate people mistreating animals. That's not the way to train anything!

I'm not nice when I'm angry.

We had a corgi mix named Guinness. He was a rescue we got when he was still a young dog. I remember him losing his puppy teeth even though he was almost full grown. He would hide anytime you replaced the trash bag in the can. I think he was beaten and tortured with a trash bag but I can't know for sure.

Dogs: Stormy (scared of storms) Beagle, Opie-Beagle, Lightening- Basset Hound, Pity(Pretty Pitiful Poodle-runt)
Squish-Pekensense,Pepper-Australian Shepard(likes to herd things), Fancy-Miniature Doberman Pincher, Graceful-German Shepard(she wasn't)
Cats-Balls(he's still got them at the moment) Grey Tiger stripe, BD(Brain- dead, jumped on my dad's bald head) orange tabby, Kit and Kat- Siamese,
That's all I can think of at this moment.
Oh, yeah ! My girl now; Strawberry(Beagle/Jack Russell Mix)

He had a skin condition that made him lose his fur in patches if you didn't give him an oatmeal bath once a week or more. Poor thing was a sweetie but a jealous boy. He could be a total lover with people and our other corgi boy but bring another dog in the mix and he became aggressive and possessive. We tried getting a cute rescue rosie pit puppy when we still had Guinnie. He was chase her off the bed or push her out of her food bowl. If I even thought about working on her training he would pee on her. No joke. He'd life his leg and pee all over her. His house breaking went out the window until we took Delaney back to the rescue. Guinness was with us first and we couldn't get rid of him just because he didn't like the new rescue that invaded his home. He had no issues with feline invaders just other dogs.

I noticed that Summer is getting a little dog shy now too with other dogs. She is okay with her big sister, Winter, and my folks dog, Buddy but she is shy around others. The last time we took the three to dog park she refused to come out from under the bench I was sitting on. Anyone else with corgis or corgi mixes notice a bit of dog shyness in their dogs after some time?

...he would pee on her...poor Rosie Pit Puppy...
I've wanted to get a corgi but they look like they would shed awful. Hey, which kind do you have, Pembroke (that's tailless, right?) or Cardigan?

When we had the boys the older one was a full breed Pembroke and Guinness was a Cardigan mix. Right now we have 2 girls that are sisters, 18 months apart. Same dam and sire. Both parents are show dogs. The girls are Pembroke and English Springer mixes. The pure bred mutts we call them. The older sister has her tail and the younger one had her's docked.

BTW all corgis have tails. Pembrokes are traditionally docked. Cardis are the preferred herders and in some areas of the world they have their tails docked but most of the time they keep the tail. I'd love to get a Cardi and a Springer when we get the space and have my own 'sporgi' pups. They are the sweetest mixes I have ever had. And the cutest. Never had any big issues with shedding. I mean between the 2 girls Summer is the one who sheds in spring. But it is only off her flanks. If you brush them they shed less. The boys didn't shed but we were living near the beach when we had them.

My first dog as a kid was a collie/golden mix my mom named Honey because of the color of her fur. After I got married my wife and I got our first Dalmatian we named Sam after our favorite beer "Sam Adams". Next came Moxie named after another beverage. Moxie's son is Cooper. We couldn't decide on a name for him until one day my 10 year old daughter saw a brand new Mini Cooper in a parking lot and ran over to look at it. My wife and I looked at each other and both said "Cooper" at the same time. We never agree to anything quickly - so it had to be.

Just ordered a dog. She is an Australian Labradoodle. We are going through the naming process.
Me: Dawg
Her: Diggity
Me: Hot
Her: Deputy
Me: Settled, Deputy Hot Diggity Dawg
Her: Not settled.

Me: Katherine, we can call her Kat.
Her: No.
Me: Then how about Catherine?

I am getting ready for work so here is the one I miss the most. Pearl was a beautiful red Merle Aussie. Smart as all get out. I could give her a look and she knew what to do. Loved kids and was very gentle. If the truck was leaving she was it. When she got too old to jump in the back I let her ride in the passenger seat. She lived to be 12 or 13.

We have had so many dogs I can't even remember all of the names. Every one has been a rescue, and every one had a story that would break your heart. Almost all were mutts, but a few were rescued from puppy mills. I guess a few of my favorites were:

Toby the Wonder Dog - mutt
Kirby - a little Dachshund that ran everywhere. Nicknamed Houdini because he could get out of any cage.
Murphy - a Norwegian Elkhound
Susie - an Australian Shepard that was smart as a whip, and so gentle I don't think she chewed her own food.
Boston - mutt - a trained circus dog
Tucker - our current resident miniature poodle
