Ok, so I live in far north central Texas (south of Wichita Falls). I am having some trees and vegetation torn out around the house to make a yard. Basically I'll have a combination of mowed clumps and bare dirt.

Anyway, so I'm getting a lawn, and I need to find a commercially sold grass seed that will be somewhat low maintenance (basically mow, water, repeat). It doesn't have to be fancy and lush and win any contests, and I don't want to be out in the yard all the time with a bunch of test tubes and spectrometers. Just grass. I want to fling it out there and water it, maybe throw some organic fertilizer (like milorganite?) and wait.

And I don't want seed that has a bunch of chemicals coated all over it (mefenoxam, etc) that's going to get into the groundwater. Just bare seed and nothing else.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If possible, wait until late August to seed. Lower sun angle and cooler weather will result in better germination. Also less water required and weeds will not compete with the grass. Perrienial ryegrass is the best bet, not sure if it grows well at your location though.

What worked for me may not for you but...

If you can let go to seed before you mow it.

Yes it will be a pain to mow.

I live near enough to you. My front yard was nice until I quit caring. It is sandy loam. Still thinking about seeding it but haven’t yet. I pay for my water.
I found Turner Seed online, they’re out by Breckenridge, Texas, and sell a variety of grass seeds among other seeds. They might have what you’re looking for.

Ha! I just talked to Turner! They said anything was going to be a struggle this time of year, but I'm going with common hulled bermuda at 2 lbs/1000 ft sq, 1 hr of water in the early morning, 20 mins in late afternoon just before sunset, just to cool the soil off. I'll have to do the yard in sections, because I don't have that many sprinklers LOL.

But yeah, I have my plan now.
