To much potatoes per hole, should cut the potato & let it callus, maybe even spout before planting.
Compost or manure should be applied before potatoes & at least 3 inches below the potatoes .
We do not plant flower bulbs under compost or manure:
1) roots go down for the most part.
2)compost/manure can rot tubers & bulbs.
3) manure should be applied in Fall or late winter, raw manure is bad for eatable plants.
I like the fact that children are helping with the garden.

I have been gardening a long time.
I learned planted the whole large tuber Will cause the plant to live off the tuner & not reproduce any new tuber.
Had 25 pounds & got about ten pounds at harvest.
