With large melons like cantaloupe you need to support the melon with a diaper to hold the weight. The stems will get pinched and the melon will never mature if you don't.
 
I grew butternut squash for the first time last year and it did really well for me in the southern part of our state. I let mine run on ground but did have some vines crawl on my fencing. The squash did fine on the fencing till ripened enough for picking so you should do good on the hog panels. The butternut squash makes the best pies in my opinion. I ended up making some into butters and curds for canner and the squash 'keep' very well in a stockroom.

I watched a YouTube video and the woman used panty hose to support her melons.
That sounds funny for some reason.
 
This is how mature squash should look... just sayin'... I love fried squash. :heart:
