My point in suggesting a remote radio position is that if we are to rebuild a society and defend against other areas that might be organized, we will need to establish normal relations with neighboring communities. Setting up a monitored radio at a choke point, gives you the ability to watch what they do during the earliest contact. There is no substitute for 'eyes on' but that works both ways. By setting up a remote radio "intercom", you deny them the ability to see anything about you or your defenses. Hopefully this station would be close enough to your perimeter to be observed by your forward observation post, but far enough away that their first realization of your presence is the radio at the barricade. Once the conversation has started (and hopefully you have a good vantage point over the radio) you can shadow them after the conversation to see if they lead your scouts back to a larger group or other potential threat.

If I was the stranger, I would be wary of the radio-only contact, but likely to use it if I really needed or wanted to make contact. After an initial conversation, I would certainly expect face to face meetings. Any neighbor who tolerates being treated with disrespect (as in strip searches, and hooded marches) is not likely to be an asset to your community either as a member or a neighbor.
