I found these today... Red Buckeye aka Aesculus pavia aka Firecracker Plant. It’s commonly used as a lawn ornamental. It’s also been crossed with European Buckeye for a new species named “Red Horse Chestnut”, also used as an ornamental. The blooms have almost no scent but they are striking. It’s prone to a fungus called “Leaf Blotch”

I usually see this shrub in old hardwood timber. Single plants, maybe 2, never in patches like this except in full sunlight. Here, on the side of this road, it gets sunshine most of the day and grows well.

100yrs ago the seeds and bark were used in salves for rheumatism. Some folks carry a buckeye for luck.

I seen them in catalogs for lawns, but you can not eat it, so I passed on buying one. I could use some more luck.
