My son got this Sawyer mini water filtration system for my fathers day gift. I had to try it out since they were all teasing me that I wouldn't drink any water from a roadside water hole because I had investigated the various systems and told them how safe they were to use.
We had to take a drive to find the yukiest water around. Heading up hwy 180 we found just a hole. It was on the side of the road at 7400 ft where some snow had melted and left a puddle right at the roads edge. don't know how long it had been standing there but it looked funky. Deep brown color with some weird stuff floating around in it.
We had 2 clear cups, one was filled with the ugly water then placed on the water pouch. I attached the main unit to the pouch and filtered it into a clear cup. It came out very clear and the test, to drink it and see. It tasted as good as any bottled water and it was cold so it was even pleasant to drink. By the time we got back home I had drank at least a half gallon of water from various puddles, a small non-moving pond and from a section of river that was not moving. Never got sick or worse because I trusted the device and what is advertised.
Filters a 0.1 microns and up to 100,000 gallons of water. The pouch and filter unit can be back flushed for cleaning and fits a 16oz plastic coke bottle. comes with a 6 inch plastic straw. I really like this system. IT's small and portable and will last a long time on one filter. Filters are available.
SP128MC - Sawyer® Mini Water Filtration System: Ideal for outdoor recreation, hiking, camping, scouting, domestic and international travel, and emergency preparedness. This high performance Mini filter fits in the palm of your hand, weighs 2 ounces, and filters up to 100,000 gallons (30 times more than comparable filters). It attaches to the included drinking pouch, standard disposable water bottles; hydration packs, or use the straw to drink directly from your water source. It is perfect for everything from camping with the kids to traveling abroad where tap and bottle water cannot be trusted.
The filter removes 7 log (99.99999%) of all bacteria (like salmonella) as well as other harmful bacteria which causes cholera, and E. coli, and 6 log (99.9999%) of all protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium. These removal rates equal or exceed other filter options. EPA guidelines allow ten times more protozoa left in the water than Sawyer PointONE filters allow.
