I keep looking for the bad weather reports but they are hiding from me.

I don't think it will reach far enough south to get us.
Checked the forecast, and only low 40's for our next week lows.
(which is cold enough for me )

I feel for those who believe they have to get to that crummy job and get into an accident because of travel conditions, or those two or four legged beings who might freeze.

Many people who work by the hour don't have any choice. If they don't show up for work, they don't get paid.

This cold is why @elkhound is big on sleeping bags that weigh 17 pounds. Power "could" be out for very-very long time. I have (4) FOUR of those 35 below zero sleeping bags. They are very cheap survival insurance.

No matter where you are! People froze to death here during the big ice storm of Feb 2021! Widespread power outages, no way for folks to drive anywhere because of the amount of ice! Something simple like the right sleeping bag would have saved lives!

Looks like upper 30's here a couple of days, upper teens maybe a few nights! Then I'll be ready for summer!!

I saw that too. And it supposed to stay for weeks. We have enough hay, but not enough firewood. I think we better start cutting some more ( lots of trees down, they just have to be cut and transported )

Just checked the cooling systems on both tractors and all 3 vehicles. Everything is fine except the Massey Ferguson. The coolant looks a little weak. Don't remember the last time it was flushed. The artic blast doesn't get here until sunday night so I have time. Need to go to town for groceries tomorrow anyway. I'll pick up a couple more gallons of anitfreeze and flush the Massey on Saturday. Temps will be in the 50's so it won't be a pain to accomplish.

Remember that Polar Vortex we had a few years ago? I told my neighbor, Thank God for global warming because if it wasn't for GW we would all freeze to death.

As for GW, I'm not a big believer in it.

That was really bad for those in the DFW area, the cities especially! People were stranded because the roads weren't cleared and froze to death in their homes with no heat! Many houses in the city have their water heaters in the ATTIC, when everything thawed the broken pipes flooded their homes! What a major failure! I almost felt bad sitting here with food, heat, and generators!! Bad thing is, if it got that cold and icy again, it would be a deadly repeat!!

the older you get the more important the sleeping bag is...why risk a fall outside getting wood etc. if you can just stay put inside hunkered down..or more importantly if you are not able to do anything for whatever reason.

when i traveled so much back i the day i kept my sleeping bag in cab of my truck because if i went off road and was trapped etc. and people missed my truck off the road...i seen that happen...i could reach over and at least cover my person up till rescued...if i made it that long in a bad accident off the road thing.

i have had and still have good bags....then better bags...now the best bag...987 years later and 9 million forum post from sourdough finally sunk in my hard head...but truth in advertising...he still held my hand and had to lead me to it...he found them at good price and directed me to it....lol

I think it's just winter weather. Sometimes it's really harsh. It's winter, after all.

I remember when our weatherman in Alaska would tell us that we were about to have a four dog blizzard ..... the first year there we got really spazzed out about it. After that, it was "Mmmm okay then".........and we stocked up the pantry a little and made sure we knew where the flashlight was.

A few years ago we had a huge arctic blast here in Oklahoma. The temperature stayed in the single digits for a week or so and there was lots of ice and wind that took down power lines so there was no power. The worst thing about it was that it came at the end of February after all the trees had leaves on them. A huge tree in our front yard was split in two by the ice weight. We lost lots of limbs (that one tree survived).......and had to spend a fortune getting things cleaned up. But. It was still "winter".

Just be ready for whatever winter throws at you and you'll be fine.

And if you are traveling even to the grocery store in the winter in an EV......ya better have that sleeping bag ready.

I'm sure it will if people aren't prepared for it. A pair of tire chains, or cables, take up almost no room in a car. But it could make the difference between getting stuck, sliding off the road or making it home safely. We're all about prepping here so a simple thing like tire chains should be in everyone's emergency kit. It's better to have something and not ever use it, than need it and not have it.
We get a lot of ice here, sometimes several inches. We're used to driving on snow and ice out here so it's not much of a problem for us. But we still prep for it.

My guess is the Finance boys have purchased futures on the power everywhere and might get first offers on the power. They will then sell it to higher bidders elsewhere.

So the unknown is will you be without power.

That's why I invest in utility companies.

I worry most about the animals. Ours should be ok, but I hate seeing most of the neighbors outside with crappy or no shelters. Our direct neighbor at least puts his sheep in the barn in bad weather but some don't have a barn

Son will have to drain his water again , since his pipes freeze every winter but it's ok, he can come to our house to shower
So far we have never had our pipes freeze, they have no insulation at all and are under the house. When it gets close to zero degrees we leave the hot water running just in case.

yeah you can't really drive on ice even with chains, plus trees break under the weight and fall on power lines
We might cover our solar panels with tarps so the ice doesn't damage them ( not sure it would but just in case)

I've never covered my solar panels before. It's common for them to be covered in a foot or more of snow before they finally shed the snow. Plus we get a lot of freezing rain here too. So far we've never had a problem.
