WHY IT SHOULD MATTER TO YOU EVEN IF YOU DON’T LIVE ANYWHERE NEAR THERE.
Officially known as the “Rim Fire”, the blaze which is turning into the largest wildfire in the nation this year has consumed more than 125,000 acres (more than 200 miles) as of midafternoon 8/24/2013, threating several towns in the area, and is poised to cut off the water and power supplies for the entire city of San Francisco.
The fire, which started a week ago in a remote canyon in the Stanislaus National Forest, currently is only 5% contained. The fire has entered Yosemite National Park, and is rapidly expanding, closing down Highway 120 and forcing the evacuations of the city of Groveland to the southwest, and Tuolumne and Ponderosa Hills to the northwest of the fire.
