So, it seems the "NOOSE" is tightening.

NO......100% NO. You basically must produce what is required for a passport, to get a "REAL" ID as required by DHS. The banks require "REAL" Federal approved ID, which includes U.S. Passport & Passport Card.

I "FULLY" expect that post May 2025 all Americans will several times a day here the "ORDER" (Read Demand) Your PAPERS PLEASE.
The State I live can only demand my ID is during a legal traffic stop or when I’ve been arrested.

My ex wife's grandfather earned a Bronze Star in Europe during WWII. He was an artillery observer. His position was overrun but he evaded capture and continued to direct fire from behind the enemy line for several days before he was rescued. Iowa has Bronze Star license plates. His family got him those plates. He was a little shy about the attention he got from them, but it was a well deserved honor.

I'm glad they have things like veteran plates to honor everyone that served.
I think Florida does as well.
I was awarded the Bronze Star for “meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces “.
But my friends that I see at the reunions don’t wear their awards - Silver Stars, and more. So I don’t wear mine either.

I challenge you to try this. Walk into a branch of your bank that you rarely ever use, take your latest bank statement for your savings account, and request $20,000.00 "CASH" from your account. When that fails, feel free to then try using a NON-Real ID card issued by your state.

In Texas, all I had to provide was an official Birth Certificate. BUT that in itself was a BIG ordeal for me since it was out in California. We went back and forth for months. . . I had my marriage certificate just incase they wanted the name change, but since it took me sooo many months to get my birth certificate and I was illegally driving back and forth for work for sooo many months, I was nervous going into finally get my DL.

Teller started to ask me for my ID then commented that she saw they have my current Driver’s License on file. How or when did they scan my DL?
It gets even better.
When we were going to board a cruise ship even years ago, I was digging out my passport as I got to the counter and she said: "we already know who you are", spun her monitor around, and there was my passport picture staring back at me.
Yes, the machines work .

To get my Texas DL all I had to do was trade in my Canadian DL. When I got back to Canada I just traded my Texas DL for a Canadian DL. Both times it didn't take more than 20 min.
Everything was already networked both sides of the border.

All documents should be kept in a shielded case until directly handed over to a customs agent two feet in front of you.

DW's aunt ran into that problem when we went to the casino and her D/L was expired. They refused to deal with her even though she had a casino card there, and they love her very much.
She easily got a 'non-D/L' ID card and she (and us) returned with a vengeance 2 weeks later:waiting:.
Get even = 2 hotel rooms for free and 2 free bottles of Moscato rosé wine:thumbs:.
The whole need an ID to vote, means the state must offer a NON D/L state ID to anyone who can not or will not drive. In a few cases it is free.
South Carolina has one, I believe every state has one.

Every loan & account you open.
Remember the old spy movie where they ask for Your Papers!
That is a D/L in USA.
I thought everyone knew this, a passport can be used also, but cost more, both are two forms of ID, also B/C & SS card with SS#.

Works right up till, they will not renew it. I am not sure that post May 2025 the current D/L will qualify for DHS requirements.
Doomsday for me is: 05-2024. At my last eye appt the girl said: "you know you can't pass the D/L vison test at the DMV, right?".
My reply: "You're not gonna tell'em, right?" :waiting:
She said no, we don't report any info to the DMV that is not requested by a customer.:huggs:
...so if you see me on the road, stay a safe distance away.🤪

Hubby and I got our DLs in 2021, covid time!! Eye chart was HUGE and on the wall. We got 8 YEAR licenses, renewable by mail next time for 6 MORE YEARS! Always look for the good in a situation!😉😊 When the push bar on my truck is coming your way, it's not because I can't see, it's because you are on the wrong side of my country road and you need to learn to stay on your side!😮😃

Yes at the post office, but in some cases it is demanded, when you get a job or join the army or at least for me.
Yea my SS card was required to get an enhanced DL.
I'm just saying the original purpose of the SS number was not for ID but that changed when the government realized how easy that made things for them.
When I started a new job the needed my SS card not just the number.
They issued me my hospital ID badge and I had to go to the SS office and get a new card because I couldn't find my old one.
I went to SS and told them what I needed.
He said no problem just give me the number.
He didn't ask for any ID and I asked him why. He said my hospital badge was good enough.
So I got an official SS card by using my hospital ID so I could prove to the hospital that I had a SS card and was legally allowed to work.

Fast forward 20 years and my wife found my original SS card from the 1960s in her jewelry box.

What's an enhanced drivers license? We had to show all sorts of paperwork to renew in Florida and when we moved here to get a Virginia one ( birth certificate and for me citizenship paperwork, marriage license, old drivers license, social security card)
What new thing is going to happen ? Confused....
I never let my passport expire btw. I might have to fly to Europe for any family emergency on short notice
But I did get it stolen in a motel once . Thankfully I keep all my old ones and didn't have too much of a problem getting a new one

They keep changing the start date (currently May 2025) but when it goes into effect you will need an enhanced Dl to fly.

Enhanced Drivers Licenses (EDLs) are state-issued enhanced drivers licenses that provide proof of identity and U.S. citizenship. They are issued in a secure process, and include technology that makes travel easier. EDLs are a low-cost, convenient option for entering the United States from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean through a land or sea port of entry, in addition to serving as a permit to drive.
EDLs make it easier for U.S. citizens to cross the border into the United States because they include:
  • A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip that will signal a secure system to pull up your biographic and biometric data for the CBP officer as you approach the border inspection booth.
  • A Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) or barcode that the CBP officer can read electronically if RFID isn't available.

But there is hope!
Have an eye appointment on 1-24-23.
Last time I was in he talked about changing out the lense in my right eye that has a circle of cataracts in it. I told him that it still worked good enough.
This time I will tell him: "Lets do it!".
Both in-laws got all of theirs changed out and they could see great.
I will always remember MIL spotting a single grain of rice on the kitchen floor.

I have posterior sub orbital cataracts that will need surgery in the not too distant future too. Not looking forward to it, but it is what it is.

Many advances have been made in just the past few years.
It is no longer "a big deal".
Oh, and for us hardheads, cataracts only get worse. 🤨
