Sourdough starter/how to use it

I've been waiting 30 years for my wife to make sourdough bread. OK, maybe it's only been a year. Her first loaf turned out like a 1 foot 2×6. Tasted good but needed a chisel to slice it. She's going to try again some day.
Sourdough isn't as easy as yeast bread. I tried it once or twice, many years ago. I wasn't impressed with any part of the process nor the product. Nobody in my house will eat it anyway, I'm not going to bother.
