Steroids would be a very valuable drug to have on hand oral and IV/IM. This class of drug is used for a veriety of symptoms and types of inflammatory response's. They are used for vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels) RA, Lupus,Gout. In a grid down world steroids would become an invaluable asset. Myositis (inflammation of muscle), anaphylaxis, asthma, severe muscle spasms of the back.
There are side effects with the use of steroids in some rare cases. infection, allergic reaction, bleeding into the joint, ruptured tendons, skin discoloration, weakening of the bone joint and tendon, (from frequent, and repeated injections, and to the same area).
As with any drug the risk vs the benefits need to be weighed. When using steroids you need to think like a farmer rather than a fisherman. Meaning steroids work in a longer term setting rather than a quick one.
When used in asthma, anaphylaxis, back pain, muscle strains and sprains, you should to see the long term effects rather than expecting to see it work right now.
This type of medication will help extend your other meds if used correctly. In asthma they will help you conserve your Albuterol, Atrovent, epi by reducing the inflammation of the bronchial swelling.
In Anaphlaxis they will help you conserve your epi 1:1000, 1:10000, Benadryl, Albuterol, Atrovent, and possibly advanced airway supplies as well as O² if you have it.
In sprains and strains they can extend your NSAIDs, and narcotics. You need to keep in mind steroids work well in most cases, however you should also keep in mind that when your patient starts to feel better, they (NEED TO GIVE THERE BODY TIME TO HEAL) or the original problem will be compounded. This time may not be recoverable.
Just food for thought, and time to study.
Good luck, be safe, and God bless.
