Having scuba-dived with sharks, it was probably just 'feeling him out' to see if he was breeding material.

No diversion - when me and my buddies were out drinking and playing pool, pong, space invaders, etc. every Saturday night, we would always make sure we ended up in a place that played SNL on the TV, followed by Monty Python. Wouldn't ever want to miss those! (at least not back in the 70's)
