Thoughts on human euthanasia....

You have a right to kill yourself- its evil but you have the right. That being said, giving the medical industry and the insurance industry a foothold in that option is a retarded move.

I think the more human life is devalued here in the US it'll open up the euthanasia law that's in Canada to here. I know there is alot said already about the elderly in the US and not wasting medical resources because they are "old enough" already. Wondering if that line is crossed, and of course abortions are acceptable in many states because of "womens health", and that's murder, maybe next will be euthanizing disabled people, down syndrome people, cripples. I hope it never comes to that.

had a dr. friend in hospice...she said they told old and/or sick if they are ready to go just stop eating and you be gone shortly.

about morphine....its used to speed up death..it shuts organs down...per dr.'s and nurses i talked with and know in real life.

I am thinking if you kill yourself and leave behind a bunch of responsibilities like young kids or pets or a spouse, it's a chicken way out and you shouldn't do it, but if you are old and sick, why not? Nobody benefits from you staying alive at that point that at all except the greedy hospitals and nursing homes

There would of course be abuses.

Who gets to decide life or death if the patient is unable to grant permission?

Nobody benefits from you staying alive at that point that at all except the greedy hospitals and nursing homes

springboarding off your comments nothing else....what if your loved one...say grandchild loves you so much and they trying to hold on for every moment with you because they worship the ground grandma walks on....holding on to give that other person the last hours,days,weeks or months of life might be priceless to them.....be clear i have no real answers for this subject...its to personal and huge mixed emotions from both ends of it...just various thoughts about it..

i was headed to job site one spring and running late...i just couldnt drive past my great uncles house knowing how sick he was i stopped....he was sick in bed with cancer...we visited awhile...when i left he hugged me and told me he was proud of me and all the things i was doing in the big wild places...last words were catch a bunch of fish for us...he died a few weeks later on my birthday....i caught fish like nobodys business too...one trip i caught so many it was all i could do to carry them on my shoulders on a long pole....for myself and uncle !

If you read @Binky 's description of the maids procedure, the patient needs to prove that they are capable of making the decision before hand, I had a friend who got improperly treated for cancer, got the second round which ended up putting him in ridicules pain, beyond what the strongest pain meds that would leave him somewhat cognizant could handle. he shared the decision and details with me. Why any one would think it is OK for someone terminal to suffer is beyond me.
On the flip side, A doctor or politicial or anyone else should never have the power to make that decision, in which case it would be SCARY, of course Chemical companies have be slow rolling killing people for decade, and people co operate.

In most cases I feel that suicide is the cowards way out.
I've only given this subject maybe 5 minutes of thought, and every case is different. It's easy for any of us to sit here and say what we'd do in these situations, but we really won't know for sure until the time comes.

I think that would be very selfish. I would not want my loved one to suffer any longer than they wanted to and would totally be ok with them not staying alive. My grandmother and mother both suffered A LOT at the end, and my grandmother continued to say she wished she was dead and even refused to eat but they kept her alive anyway until her legs got gangrene and my parents had to sign a form saying they did not wish to amputate her legs and let her die ( she was 96 at that age) and I am thinking to myself, oh hell no, I am so not getting to that point....
Pearl made a very good point, why do we put animals out of their misery and not humans? Especially if they WISH to die. My grandmother did not have the option to do it herself, she was paralyzed after a stroke and couldn't walk.

I think Canada's law went one step too far to not only include terminally-ill people, but also people who scream:
"My life sux and always will, and I want out!! "
Canada: "That's a medical procedure, don't try to do it yourself and screw it up. We can painlessly take you to the exit-door".
(Remember, most citizens don't have guns there.)

totally get that.....my previous post was mostly geared towards the very young loved one..not adults dealing with adults...to be clear...i get every ones post in this thread...i have no answers....sometimes we think we might till we get to that point only to find out our reaction and previous decision has changed and we go with another decision....somethings we just dont know till the time comes...i support others to do their will...but draw the line at govt or corporation making a decision for me...me and family and friends will decide.

I have my personal convictions of what I consider right and wrong. What I consider is God's plan and what I consider adverse to God's will.

But I would not force another person to submit to my convictions. FWIW, my conviction on forcing a conviction on others - is that such force is wrong itself. This is against what is taught in my religion BTW. The force option presides there, although every thing is done to disguise it as not being force. It's not truly force, more like mental coercion I'd say.

I agree with you once again! It is not someone else's business what you do with your body! If you believe in God ( I don't) , then let HIM/her/it be the judge!!! YOU ( general, not you ) are not the judge of me! As long as I am not hurting you it is not your business.
That is one of those things about most religions that really irritates me. I don't care what anyone else believes, but don't force me to believe the same thing. Whatever happened to seperating church and state?

.what if you don't have any relatives and have a stroke and are paralyzed ? Your only option would be to ask someone to put you out of your misery. A lot of people seem to think that the government and hospitals will kill you against your will, but I think it is the opposite. They won't make anymore money if you are dead! They keep you alive as long as possible and cash in on your suffereing! THAT is evil imo

btw my plan if that happens to me is for my husband or kids to take me some place where it is legal to be put out of my misery like Switzerland or Canada, or Belgium

How about this? You let someone come in and inject your IV with something that will kill you painlessly in thirty minutes, in that time you have a chance to get right or squeeze an antidote button. You didn't kill yourself, but you didn't save yourself either, it's like not eating and drinking really.

Then there is this tradition:
A sin-eater was someone who ate food placed near a corpse to take on the deceased person's sins. The ritual was believed to help the deceased's soul enter the afterlife without their sins.

Family and friends would gather around the deceased Bread or pastry was placed on the deceased's face or chest The food, along with beer and money, was passed to the sin-eater
The sin-eater ate the food and drank the beer.

There is a tradition from both Christian and Pagan sources, One being, that if you die too quickly your life lesson might not carry over properly and you have to relive this life over.

In Christianity, the supposed gift of life comes from god, and throwing it away is an insult.
I see a bit of both, but if I'm in a fire with no possible way out or dying of cancer, I'm pulling the fast eject switch.

Do I believe in euthanasia? Not really. However I had a cousin who died of brain cancer. From what I've heard, the end was pretty painful despite the fact that he had control of his morphine drip. There just wasn't enough pain meds to ease his pain. I could not have just stood by while he was suffering so much. Thankfully I'll never know what I 'would' have done. Or could have done. Hopefully I'll never be in that situation. If there was a way to make it so it's only the person suffering who has to decide, it seems like the best way. Like what y'all said Canada does.

Been discussing this thread with husband the last few days, and talking about how everyone feels. He has asked me twice to end it for him, and I couldn't and I wouldn't. He knows that, and is now glad that I didn't.
