urban bugging in is certainly doable, but you need to hunker down and not get noticed. food and water supplies are the main thing you will need, but if the power goes off and it probably will you need to think about alternative cooking and heating and lighting without setting the place on fire and giving away your location, windows need to be boarded or black out blinds fitted.

Yes cooking is something I need to be more focused on. I'm btrueoy stumped on that category...

well if your cooking on anything but a conventional stove or cooker you've got to be careful, as well as the chance of fire there is the carbon monoxide to be aware of, you need to have either a window cracked open or some form of ventilation.
we had an apartment before we moved into the house here, there was a gas fire and the vent was a big hole in the wall on the opposite wall, it let in a huge draught so we covered it over, we soon started getting headaches and feeling sleepy, so we had to uncover the vent again, its something to be aware of.

I got a small cast iron grill. I store a few bags of charcoal. Now before folks get up in arms about fumes and smothering to death, It will be used in the bathroom and a battery operated exhaust fan will remove fumes to the rooftop. Since we will only be heating up soup type meals, no people gathering smells will be exiting. Yes, the bathroom is not the most deletable location but if you have kept is clean, it not going to be a health hazard.

Water is the next issue, Bathtub Bob (100 gallons or the 65 gallon version). Hot water heater (30 to 50 gallons) Bottled water another 30 to 40 gallons (remember folks - apartment). Water is going to be a real problem for your family -- 5 people = minimum of 5 gallons per day. More likely 7.5 gallons per day. With the absolute best scenario, you are looking at about a month worth of water. So you are going to have a dire problem very quickly. You are going to need a water purification system in place before the SHTF. You will have to scrounge water from unbelievable sources. Golf course water hazards, full of germs and duck crap, will look like a desert oasis.

Now to defense. Black plastic garbage bags taped to all windows -- prevent light from showing or movement from within. Pre-cut plywood inside window covers (not installed -- apt.manage gets real upset if installed) that can be nailed or screwed if you have a battery powered drill, slow down intruders. keep hammer and nails handy, for remounting window covers that have been knocked in. You and wife will have to be armed and prepared to repel all boarder, at different windows. It will most likely be more than just one invader if they are trying to kick in your window or doors.

Now this is going to sound real harsh, but you cannot take any prisoners and if possible, you should hunt down any that have attacked your apartment. Now my reasoning is that if you have done a good job of repelling these folks and they figure they are not going to get your supplies, then they may decide to just burn you out. You cannot defend against a fire attack. Jm2C

this type use burn gel,

this one propane, that trangia type is quite handy..

but as mentioned earlier in this thread,do scout ahead what is available around you, stores, depots, gun stores, camping stores etc,put them on a paper map and if possible do pay those places a visit just when it heats up and "borrow" what you can..

scout ahead bug out routes if you have to abandon your place.

With less than 6 months until we move to our house honestly bugging in for long term just isn't practical given my situation not because it's impossible but with my number of people I have to protect and provide for resources would run scarce pretty quickly.

I chose the coal fired cast iron grill because I can always find twigs and small wood objects to burn. Other fuels might require me to go into area's frequented by other folks. Part of my Grey Man plan, out of sight out of mind. Round up twigs at night and stay indoors during daylight, as much as possible. All the items I mentioned in a previous post can be transported to another location. the garbage bags are not used until needed for safety or garbage. The plywood is cut but not installed and can be re-purposed at another location. Water jugs, bottles will travel too. Planning to bug-in, will work at the apartment of can be moved to the new home. N o waste and no extra cost. At some point you new home will lose power, so the grill will come in handy. You are sill going to have garbage, so the bags won't be wasted, water, same thing, the only potential wasted item is the Bathtub Bob and they are cheap insurance. JM2C

I agree with the coal grill, I don’t want to want rely on anything store bought. That makes complete sense, even the bathtub bob wouldn’t be a waste because the bigger picture is bugging in and like you said that’s insurance. Extra insurance at that point...

Can't use a charcoal grill inside, where are you going to get the charcoal if you're not relying on the store, making your own? also, the charcoal needs to stay dry ;) Another point, if you are around a lot of people you may not want to cook outside, being discrete is the order of the day in an SHTF, plus, once you start the charcoal, they don't just turn it off.

I wouldn’t use coal I would use natural items to burn twigs etc... I would cook in the laundry room because it has 2 exhaust fans for some reason.

To be on the safe side, get a battery powered exhaust fan and a very small discrete solar panel to charge the batteries for your fan. If you are going to be cooking in the laundry room, there is a good chance you will not have electricity. I keep my coal for local power outage emergencies and will use twigs for long term grid down situation. I also store the coal a plastic garbage bag, in a steel garbage can. Word of caution: DO NOT try to heat a house with a charcoal grill, just too darn risky.

Do not forget to brush up upon locksmith and security system skills. As the saying goes... "He who holds the key can unlock my local grocery stores."

Leisure pools.
I played around with your suggestion because I loved the efficiency in it. Try to find one with a carpark, change all of the locks and barricade all access to the actual building. You may want to design a way to do this to carpark itself.

I am planning a different approach to prepping. I live in London. All of the firearms will belong to the bad guys if martial law were to be declared. They may not be illegal anymore after declaring martial law. Will criminals become pirates and plunder all of the provisions? London being very urban is like a treasure trove of essential goods.

This has been brought up many times but I can’t resist once more. If you are in a large city and the **** starts flying, get out. Start looking and planning now because just getting in a car and heading out without a pre thought out plan just makes you a refugee. Sure, some in a city may make it through a disaster but the odds are really bad. I like to increase the odds of me surviving in my favor. And it’s not just about surviving, but doing so without great hardship.

make a big enough root cellar that will do as a bunker too, combine these two if you make one?
I most certainly will.

Has anyone here ever seen an animated film called Where the wind blows?;

When the Wind Blows is a 1986 British animated disaster film directed by Jimmy Murakami based on Raymond Briggs' comic book of the same name. The film stars the voices of John Mills and Peggy Ashcroft as the two main characters and was scored by Roger Waters.

What exactly distinguishes a bunker from all other buildings? I know that lead is important for radioactive protection. They use lead paint in this film as an alternative to lead sheeting. Will it work? Will cellar really do the job?

Look at Chernobyl, I think that will be radioactive for centuries but some people live there, not many but some, what their life expectancy is I don't know, some animals have moved back too.
its not radioactivity i'm so worried about, if i'm not in the target area I should be okay, its the fallout/nuclear winter where nothing will grow that's the real problem.
