Former US Army counselor who stole millions from Gold Star families sentenced to prison

August 23, 2024 Matthew Enuco - nj.com and Jeff Goldman - NJ Advance Media Group

A New Jersey financial counselor and U.S. Army reservist who admitted to defrauding Gold Star families that received death benefits after their family members died serving in the military has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison. Caz Craffy also will be subject to three years of supervised release and was ordered to forfeit $1.4 million on top of his 12-year, seven-month sentence, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Also known as “Carz Craffey,” the 42-year-old Colts Neck resident was indicted in June 2023 after investigators accused him of targeting families of deceased veterans and collecting millions in commissions on trades in financial securities without the approval of his clients.
Craffy was a major in the U.S. Army reserves, having been enlisted since 2003, and also worked as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst from November 2017 through January 2023 as a financial counselor, authorities said.
Gold Star families, families of military veterans who died while on active duty, are entitled to $100,000 plus up to $400,000 in service member life insurance, officials said.

As a civilian financial counselor, Craffy was responsible for offering general financial education to families receiving death benefits and was prohibited from providing personal opinions on what to do with those benefits, officials said.
Craffy acknowledged that he was prohibited from personally participating in any government matter in which he had an outside financial interest, yet he maintained outside employment with two financial firms from Point Pleasant Beach and Boca Raton, Florida, authorities said.
The financial firms paid commissions to Craffy based on the size and volume of trades, not on whether they earned any money, and were paid out of the accounts on whose behalf the trades were made, prosecutors said in the indictment.
Craffy admitted he encouraged families to invest benefits in accounts he managed in his outside, private employment, officials said.
Between May 2018 and November 2022, Craffy collected more than $9.9 million from Gold Star families to invest through accounts he managed in his private capacity and made trades without prior consent —which violated both financial firms’ policies, officials said.
Craffy earned more than $1.4 million in commissions for the unauthorized trades, authorities said, which resulted in losses totaling more than $3.7 million.

Which is why we should just execute them publicly. That would dissuade a whole lot more people.
Usually I'm pretty harsh on crime, and would like to see the death penalty used a lot more often. But for theft or embezzlement, I'm not sure that it warrants the death penalty. Jail time and restitution, definitely.

The crime here is not theft or embezzlement, it is committing high crimes and treason against the families of those who died in service to their nation, the nation itself and the American taxpayer. A crime deserving of swift and severe punishment.

I'm pretty sure that isn't the way the law is written. And I doubt the law would make a distinction between one group of people over another group when it comes to having their insurance money stolen. No matter what, it's a crime and the guilty party needs to be punished according to our laws as currently written.

The laws are a joke. Leaving it to a broken justice system that has failed us all repeatedly will only serve to encourage the behavior even more. The same system who punishes those who victimize gays or blacks with sentencing enhancements but doesn't care at all about those who died in service or the families they left behind. The law that puts you in prison for spinning a tire on a rainbow crosswalk but lets you burn a US flag. No thanks, I will stick with the firing squad.

There Is a Place for "Craffy" somewhere the Sun Doesn't Shine...!!! :waiting::waiting::waiting:

This is pretty darn low.
He needs the maximum sentence, plus 10 years.
In a federal high security prison, like Leavenworth. The inmates there will surely make him see the error of his ways.

Opinions are different, so I acquiesce and say to each his own but having so many friends and family that have laid down so much for so many this is as treacherous as it comes.
This uniform makes it TREASON and that makes it DEATH just as if he took from the soldiers as they died.

An Army Reserve major and financial counselor who defrauded grieving military families out of nearly $4 million in survivor benefits has been sentenced to over 12 years in prison.

Caz Craffy, 42, of Colts Neck, N.J., admitted in April to stealing from Gold Star families and committing related crimes.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Georgette Castner ordered him to serve a 151-month sentence, the Justice Department said in a statement.

“Caz Craffy was sentenced to prison today for brazenly taking advantage of his role as an Army financial counselor to prey upon families of our fallen service members, at their most vulnerable moment, when they were dealing with a tragedy born out of their loved ones’ patriotism,” U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said in the statement.

From November 2017 to January 2023, Craffy, who was also known as “Carz Craffey,” held a civilian post at the Army’s Casualty Assistance Office, where he provided general financial education to beneficiaries of fallen service members.

Unbeknownst to the Army, Craffy simultaneously worked with two different financial investment firms and encouraged beneficiaries to invest their survivor benefits in accounts he managed. ...
