Well the "Stash Cooling System" would be good insurance from wiring mishaps. You just never know about them critters and ice cream withdrawal. :dunno: Pess had an I.T. guy and I am betting he can and will have password hacking software and can and will produce the passwords. Could save a ton of time and I am also willing to bet Pess used a password that is an actual word or phrase, like Jet Ranger or SHTF spelled out. Just a guess but that would make the password search easy ad much faster.

Now the Greenhouse will probably not need a cooling system but it is going to need a heating system. A simple heat pump with a dual ducting system will cover both possibilities. Solar panel on green house and battery & controls installed next to greenhouse will take care of the power requirements. Backup generator for redundancy and oops. Crop rotation is going to be a key feature in your planning. Different seasons for different crops and different crop purposes. Crops for nutrition and vitamins. Crops for herbs and spices. Well you get the idea and there are many folks on this forum who can and will help you plan it all out. Bee keeping would be good for both medicinal and caloric count.

The Ruger is a nice concealed carry pistol and yes most definitely easier to conceal than the 44 mag or a 357. Glad you all got your Fostechs. As for the cities, I have to agree they are not user friendly. I carry at all time, even in my home. I am too old to run and too tired to fight, I will just follow Redbeards 3 S's. There is a lot of vacant desert land. We don't have the wild hogs that Texas has, so we have to do a bit of shovel work. Pess had the concept for the "Retreat" to become an isolated compound and my concept for the "THH" was designed to be a livable fortress compound. Pess and I had many a discussion of the pro & con of each concept. The cities will become a war zone or at least area's will become No Go" zones where even the police will not enter, like parts of London and parts of Germany. I don't think it is going to happen in my life time but I do think it may happen withing my children's life time. I hope it holds off until my grand children's lifetime, so more can be done and planned for. As I see it, rural living will not be enough. If a ranch or farm is not designed and structured as a fortress, then it will not survive. Today's farms and ranches all require the owners to expose themselves to capture or ambushes. I don't think the danger will be from the big cities, I think it will come from the locals who did not plan ahead but know where the food is raised or grown. The city folks will be too busy stealing and killing each other to head for the country folks. The local drug dealers and petty crooks and just the unprepared will start stealing and killing their neighbors for the food and supplies they need to survive. Granted not a pretty picture and probably not appreciated by many on this forum. Too gloomy and depressing.

I am curious how the "Kids" construction project is coming along/ I would also like an update as how the Cousns's project is doing. So many topics left in the air. I wonder how the final design for their place turned out. I advocated for a more fortress type layout and they were leaning towards a more typical farm / ranch approach. I am not too excited about Pess moving into a simple double wide, without adequate special features. Life is strange, Pess going from "Isolated Retreat", to double wide, lakeside retirement home. Well that is enough for tonight and too much for the forum. Chat at you again.

I agree 100%, Pess has just about done a 180 regarding SHTF.....which, hopefully will change once he gets caught up on three decades of history, and realizes today's world isn't the world of 30 years ago. About the only thing that has carried over, so to speak, is that he still carries everywhere he goes, as do my son and I. But he was carrying 45 years ago, so that's understandable. Can't hit the broad side of a barn with a pistol, but he's deadly with a rifle. He can do 1" groups at 500 yds with that March scope on that Tikka of his....of course that scope is rather awesome and has a lot to do with that! Puts a 500 yd bullseye 6 1/4 yds in front of you! Pretty hard to miss if you have a calm day!! I finally found the IT guy's number a week ago, and he says Pess used some kind of a password generator on his external HDD's and the NSA would be lucky if they could break in, so I don't have much hope of figuring out the password, or passwords. The home computers were not a problem...he's used the same password on them for years and his Cousin had that...it's just the external HDD's we can't get into.

Too old to run, too tired to fight? I hear you...and that's the truth...leave that to the youngsters, guys like you and me (and Pess) will just shoot 'em and let the Deputies log it in as self-defense. Well, the "Retreat" is certainly isolated, no doubt about that!! Yes, I am going to be looking around the Forum for a lot of things...I am not much of a "survivalist," but I'm learning. The Muslims ALREADY have "no-go zones" in the U.S., but don't get me started on them, or the cesspool cities, or I'll be here for hours. I tend to agree with you in thinking the greatest danger will not come from the cities...if the SHTF, I doubt there will be many survivors in the cities. My personal belief is that Pess was calling it right...isolation is the only way to guarantee your safety. Even rural areas will fall apart if the SHTF lasts any length of time, and MAG's are too dependent on having good leadership and strictly followed procedures. I know what I WOULD DO....I DON'T KNOW what YOU would do...and that's not my idea of "safety!" If my life may depend on YOU, then I need to KNOW what you would do in any given situation. Even as screwed up as Pess is right now, I still KNOW what he would do...that part of him hasn't changed. He probably never told you of some of his/our experiences, but believe me, I know what he would do, and he does it RIGHT NOW, no talk, no nothing. I would rather have him watching my six than the entire Denver PD!!

The "kids" place will probably be up and running before the end of the month, and you're right, it is basically a small farm type setup, not a fortress....but they are fairly isolated, and way back in the woods, and there will be no power line running in from the road to indicate anyone lives back there. His Cousin's project is on indefinite hold...damn Inspectors want all the bears, alligators, and some weird kind of turtle relocated before any development can begin. It may be a year or two before she can even get started. Whenever he finds the property he likes, Pess will have some "special features," as you put it, if I have to put them in myself. Cameras, motion detectors, dogs, pistols/rifles/shotguns are all fine and dandy, but a few little "surprises" are called for, in my opinion. Where does the time go...just looked at my watch, almost 5:30 already. Better put the dogs out for a little while, and start breakfast....Pess will be up around 6:00 anyway...wants to get an early start checking out some land up by the lake. Did the Evel one tell you the Bounty Hunter is going to buy Pess's place here? Well, you take care...got to get a move on.

Venom Jockey: The "Evel" one may have mentioned it but I did know Pess was planing on selling to the Bounty Hunter. I am happy to hear the "Kids" place is just about completed and up and running. They seemed like a nice couple. Not thrilled about the ranch style build but not my call. You are either "Retreat isolated" or you are not isolated, in my opinion. Off the beaten path just delays the possible. Pess and I debated this many times. My "Tin Hat House" was designed for function and defense, simply because unless you have to Helicopter in, somebody is going to know about you and wonder what you may have they need.

Pess and I and apparently you all agreed on the use of MAGs. As you pointed out, unless you have seen them in REAL LIFE action, it is all talk and chest puffing. Tactics are good to know and it is nice if they learn to practice together but I am pretty sure I could splinter and wipe out most MAG's. Macho Aging Gang are not the same as a trained and disciplined military. After a true SHTF event they will either turn on each other or become just another group of marauders. The MAG people do not live in the same compound, they don't get their supplies from a a common mess tent or building. In other words Weekend Warriors playing soldier are not the same as a true military outfit.

Sorry to hear the cousin's project is on hold. She has a real winner if she can get the Environmental Gestapo inspectors out of the way. The delayed project may just be for the best. if the "Kids" and Pess are going to be located at that lake or area. The fewer people the better.

I am going to stop here before I get this thread moves further off the rails. I think I have changed this from your introduction into a Pess update thread. The "Eval" one has my secured email address, so if you wish to discuss more in detail, contact me through that route. Welcome Dead Eye. ( I like that better then Venom Jockey). Pess bragged about your shooting too much and that is how I came to know you.

P.S. are my two little Lizard spies (moma lizard and baby lizard) still hanging out at Pess"s house?

I didn't debate with Pess long but I can tell you that the debates we did have were very fair and never attacking just informing or disagreeing in the most gentlemanly fashion. And you verified what a good person I already thought he is.

TMT, I didn't know you were so close to Pess. But it figures debating and being on forums with you that you two would be good friends. :thumbs up:

Many of our topics were not forum material and we did not want to offend any of the members. I am able to upset enough folks without going into my theory of the coming SHTF events and what I figured would be required to protect the prep supplies. We have a tremendous number of very good folks here and I learn something new everyday. Pess could and did do a great job of debating in a fair and polite fashion but a lot of his points and facts are not appreciated by a some of the folks. We did a bunch of joking and kidding and I will miss that a lot. He is a good man but also a hard man if he needed to be. I miss the Wizard, my nickname for Pess. Never knew anybody as good on the computer when it came to searching and finding info.

Venom Jockey (Dead Eye - my nickname for him) is also a good man and a very good shot with a pistol. No stand up gun fights with him, you will lose. He is one of the rare point and shoot (and hit the target) people that can draw and fire and not stop to aim. He and Pess were exploring the landscape at the "Retreat" and disturbed a big bear. Before Pess could get his rifle up and on target, Dead Eye had already fired 4 rounds and they were on target. Pess did get a finishing shot in too. That is the bear meat story. Them and the dogs spent a lot of time eating bear meat. That was almost a case of killing more than you can chew.

When folks were asking about Pess I wanted to respond but my information was gathered thru a private conversation and I did not have permission to divulge it. I am funny about those kind of things. Only Pess could grant me permission and he was not able. I am happy Venom Jockey was able to bring everybody up to date.

I understand, remember when I put up that thread asking about Pess? I bet you thought wish I could tell them but can't. Pess surprised me how much study he had done or could come up with on politics, religion and almost everything else.
Anyway like to learn from both of you. I have this problem of not knowing when to quit the politics though. But doing better although I did fall off the wagon a few days ago and went and laid it on some on a political site. I can't believe how snowflakes think, but then I feel sorry for them and go back and soften the blow.
I hear if your not a liberal up to 30 or you have no heart, if still a lib after 30 you have no brain.

Note on the goats they produce milk that the human body can actually digest and their meat is super healthy for you. Plus they can be raised on brush. And if you did decide to have goats some breeds require very little. Just a thought. And i would go aquaponics so i had free fertilizer for my plants and yummy fish to eat.

I wanted to stick with aquaponics too but didn't do enough research to make it work, So gave fish away but this is good fish food idea, and grub worms make good fish food too if you can raise them. We were going to dry the duckweed.
Or raise fish the fish can eat?:dunno:.

MAGs are useless after a period of time...too much conflict develops among the so-called leadership, and ran & file members. Your lizard friends are alive and well. The big one lives on the kitchen counter, and the little one patrols the bathroom (and isn't so little now). Pess says they gotta come with him when he moves. Bo, Pess's mixed breed, is scared to death of the little one. He'll try to sneak up on it, and it will dart into a crack, and Bo will almost do a back flip in the opposite direction! Weird dog. Did EveL One tell you about the scuffle between Bo and my male? No real damage done, they just established a pecking order, and now they tolerate each other. Bo kind of surprised me...gave Kong all he wanted and has no "QUIT" in him, even though he's outweighed by nearly 60 lbs. For his size, which is around 92-93 lbs, he is a monster!!

Pess just tells it like it is...or did, anyway. He never much cared what people thought, he was just straight up, and let the chips fall where they may. Lot of people don't like that.

Well, thank you sir, and yes, I did sort of mess up that bear's head. "Point and shoot" is a much disliked term at the ranges, but that's how I learned to shoot many, many years ago, and it just comes naturally. What REALLY ticks the range guys off is when you have a hog leg like the .44 Mag, and put 'em all in the Bull, without even aiming at it....been called a few names, but that don't stop 'em from going in that Bull. Think I even ticked Pess off once or twice knocking down them prairie dogs at 20 - 30 yards just whipping it out and pulling the trigger! Not much left of a prairie dog that gets whomped with a .44..they just sort of explode. Also, yes, it is flat amazing how much meat one lousy bear carries around...Jesus, I thought we'd never see the end of it. Bear burgers, bear steak, bear this, bear that, bear meat & dog food...sheesh!

Welcome VenomJockey. I'm sure you'll find your nitch here. I love the thought of flying helos. I only have had one ride in one, (a bell jet ranger) and loved it.

So, occasionally you can tell a flying story for me to read.

I hate to disappoint people, but, I'm sorry, I'm not much into telling war stories. Too many of them did not have happy endings, and most of our mission reports are probably buried so deep in some classified vault they'll never see the light of day, and I couldn't talk about them anyway. Didn't do a whole lot of flying on my ranch, except at roundup time, and had to lease one for that. Now I have my own, maybe I can have a little fun with it. One ride in a Jet Ranger? They may be slow for an aircraft, but they are the safest thing in the air, in my opinion....lose an engine, you can still get down in one piece.

Private ranch may be a thing of the past soon.:dunno:

Unfortunately you may be right about that. The conglomerates are buying up everything in sight, and being subsidized by the taxpayers at the same time.

VenomJ, you may like this guy ,we learned all kinds of things from him. He is very good explaining things. He has all kinds of videos on youtube.

Aquaponics, this can be done on a smaller scale and wish we had of done a few years ago when we had more energy.

Well crap, now I'm going to have to do some youtubing....now I'm not sure if This looks pretty darn interesting!hydroponic or aquaponics is the way to go. This looks pretty darn interesting!

I like that MHPgardner video....now there's a guy makes some sense.

About the only thing that has carried over, so to speak, is that he still carries everywhere he goes...

Does he still carry that Browning BDA .380acp? He talked about the gun often and seemed to really love it. Although I know he had others too.

WARNING, aquaponics and hydroponics can be addicting,so proceed with caution.:good luck::thumbs up:

VenomJ go to the Garden thread here and check out my threads on Hydroponic and Greenhouse. Have some pictures there of my system over last few years.

Will do..thanks for the heads up!

I think the BDA is permanently attached to his back! Yes, that's one thing that hasn't changed...where he goes, it goes. Nice little pistol, but for myself I prefer something with a bit more punch, though I will admit a .380 will get the job done. My preferences are my .357 mag and .44 mag, but I do have an SR9c (Ruger), 9mm as well, for CCW. Kinda hard to conceal the .357 or .44 (9"+ barrel)!!

Can't hunt what you can't see. You also forget the mother ship up in orbit. Your add on toys are no match, Laser cannons, no see em until you start to cook. Yeah, I am most definitely warmer than you, 78F today and about 20% humidity. I Shifted locations even further south. Checking out some desert brush country. Thinking about buying now and build later for the "THH" project. 203 acres, $80,000 foreclosure. Needed to view and see how well it world fit with the plans. Also wanted to get an idea of the local's and their attitudes. Folks in Tombstone do not speak kindly about these other folks. May need to spend some time checking out what is what around there and will it be defensible. I can't build to hold off the military but I can build to hold off the ghetto rats. Make the cost of entry an arm and a leg. Flat valley property and perfect for long range testing. Problem is I can't conceal house or Orchard. I will need to evaluate the trade off's. It would be almost impossible for anybody to show up uninvited but Mad Max proof would be hard to do. Property has been listed for a long time, so I have time to decide.

Wide open and scope target, covered with trees and they can hide and watch you so it is a hard decision. I had 3 teens climb over our fence walk right up to back of house. Said they thought they were on their granys land, BS. They knew better the little brats were raised out here. Now when sitting around I feel like somebody is watching me. In the middle of heavy forest a good dog is the best. Our dogs were barking wildly and I wondered why.
With the high powered weapons of today nowhere is really safe.

Forest location is a nightmare to defend. Modern ranching or farming is not defensible. If you have to be outside in the open to tend to crops or livestock, it is not defensible. Reactive cameras are not defense, they are archives for legal issues. Active camera alarms help but must be monitored or have extremely fast response alarm times. As soon as somebody crosses your property line, you want to know, not after they have gotten up by your front door. Dogs are good alarms but again it is usually after somebody has gotten too close to the house. They don't normally warn you about somebody 1000 yards away.

Mountain locations are good, if you are the highest peak. Not good if intruders can look down on your compound. Life forces most of us to make choices between living styles or defense styles. Dead eye (aka Venom Jockey) has chosen defense living. Jim has chosen a living lifestyle. Redbeard has chosen a living lifestyle. For most purposes, I have chosen a living lifestyle. When the "THH" project gets built, it will be a defense lifestyle. Fully self contained and independent, but designed to be defended first and crops / food is the secondary function. Expensive to build but cheap to maintain. The worst part is growing the orchard and the defensive plant life, it will take a full decade to be completely self sustaining.

$80K for 200+ acres isn't bad....not real crazy about "flat land," but if it is far enough off the beaten path, may be OK. The ghetto rats can be handled...they aren't that smart, a couple little "surprises" in the approach lanes should deter them. Or turn them into hamburger, whichever you prefer. How far off any main highway is it?

Much rather "defend" than be caught unawares in the open. Ain't NOTHING like isolation!! Well, that and a few little "surprises" planted here and there, just in case. And you are correct, dogs are good, but they aren't going to pay much attention to someone 1000 yds away...or even 500. Mine don't get upset until someone is within a couple hundred yards and they are trained Tibetan Mastiffs used to guarding sheep against coyotes, mountain lions, wolves and bears. Average "pet" is pretty much useless, though some folks might not appreciate me saying that. NO PLACE is safe if you don't have long range intruder alerts in real time.
