Today I attended a assembly at our local elementary school named for a helicopter pilot who died in viet nam. K thru 5th grade and they met everyone at the door and handed out a individually hand drawn and colored American flag on one side of the 8X10 piece of paper and a thank you written on the other side.
In the gym the various grades each sang one of the services songs. Then they had a video presentation with photos of the grandpa's and grandma's when they were in the military and a photo of them today with their kids and grandkids. Also photos of the current service members with their kids.
The local cub scouts brought in and retired the colors and all in all it was a great day. Talking to the principal she said they are one of the only schools that does this type of program.
My granddaughters school have ceremony at school.

Nice

What is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?

Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.

While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.

Yes, this is more than a week later than Veteran's Day, but I'm hung up on the idea of having a red poppy to wear. We could buy them when I was a kid, and I have not seen one since I left my hometown. I don't know where we bought them, or from whom.

The money made from the sale of poppies benefits the VA homes. I know that one of my uncles lived in one in Hot Springs, SD for a while.

"The VFW Buddy Poppy program provides compensation to those who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially supports the VFW National Home. Show your support today. Host a Buddy Poppy drive in your town, or have your local government issue a special proclamation.

Hear from those who assemble the mighty little flowers in our "Behind the Buddy Poppy" video. "

I know I'm rambling, but I would like to see poppies more readily available for all of us.

Every VFW post should have some.
Many posts no longer go out on Memorial Day and actively pass them out, but each post is required by National HQ to buy a certain amount each year.
We are a very small post, I think our minimum to buy is 1,000.
We used to set up a table in front of the town’s grocery store and provide them for donations, but the store no longer allows anyone but Girl Scouts cookie sales.

Anyone who would like some can private message me their mailing address and I’ll be sure you get some. They come 10 in a bunch. I’ll do this for absolutely free.

Although over veterans groups hand out poppies, the VFW invented them and has copyrighted the name Buddy Poppy.

Also, the money received from poppy donations can only be used for certain purposes, such as helping veterans in need. The money can not be used to pay the light bill, for example.

Although there may be crooked posts, our Quartermaster (treasurer) is not only honest to a fault, but his books are checked each month by three Trustees elected by the members.
