It is up to you.....but I plan to create a decade or two between your two milestones above.

As I listed above, many in my area have done just that.

Farms that have already been paid off can usually operate at somewhat reduced but still adequate profit, even when you have to contract some stuff out.

Bigger farms have the option to lease out or share farm on some or all the land beyond the boundary of the house surrounds.

Sounds like a good plan.......can you stretch that out (in combination with some other income streams)?
I already lease out the grazing on part of the property, but I'm still responsible for the fencing, water etc. Our property is completely paid off, no debts. We really don't need the income off the property, our pensions, investments and SS provide very nicely. My original intent was to keep this place in the family for future generations. But sometimes dreams just don't come true. If we could find the right young family that has the dream we may just give it to them.

I you like living there.....then stay as long as you can.

God helps those who help themselves, so it is said. Like the joke about the guy in an accident who refuses all help because God will take care of him. and when he dies he asks why God didn't help him. and God says, I sent you a Cop, a paramedic and a doctor. What more did you expect me to do?

That plays both ways if and when we reach such times: do you keep helping when people are only willing to take? Then you are not helping yourself, nor are you really helping others, just enabling them to continue their selfishness of taking. when you're played out they will just move to the next one with their hands out.

and the person who is asking for help needs to help themselves, even if its to pick up a rag and clean in thanks for the meal or shelter.

Its a delicate balance, and I for one am not willing to help those, no matter how desperate, if they are not willing to help in some way in return.

Just my opinoin and my POV

This Jase Medical is gaining in popularity. I'm kind of loving it.
Modern antibiotics can save your life right now...look up jase online and tell them you have had a checkup in the past year, don't have any sever health conditions and send the money...
I just got another kit coming for our motorhome that we might have parked in another location and so we need another kit for it. No problem, just give them the answers that check the boxes and your kit can be in the mail.
My wife is a RN and has a deep understanding and practice of natural healing but the antibiotics are still the go to when things need to be handled right now.
They also have kits for kids and teens.
Think about it. A nice dinner in a good restaurant with drinks for four people.....or a kit that could save several lives including your own or your own children's,......

I haven't ordered from them because so far I can just buy ivermectin, amox, and zpacks from our feed store. But they look like they have good product

some things amox won't fix so the doxycycline in the kit comes in handy...several other things in the kit should be useful as well since the kit is tailored for travelers in out of the way places.
We also stock the feed store supplies as well ... even got some silver enhanced ointment similar to Silvadene.
The jase kit comes with some pretty good written instructions on plastic coated cards identifying what drug for what affliction.
We use the available docs and pharmacy's right now but it is good to have a option..

My wife (the pharmacist) is not a big fan of Jase for several reasons.
Jase is "Legitimate," but
  • you're getting fleeced with the price they charge for generics
(that she knows they're getting for pennies,) and
  • the strengths they've chosen to supply are not ideal for the most common ailments they're intended for. (like 875 mg for Amoxicillin)
Hopefully they supply doses based on your weight?
  • the number count of each drug supplied is questionable.
In some cases, it may be overkill and in other cases, not enough to kill the bacteria and now you may have made bacteria immune by not having the sufficient supply to finish them off. What happens if more than one person "gets whatever it is?"
Do you just not treat them, or do you switch to another antibiotic because it's all you have left? Regardless, if you're keeping a med kit, have enough of each drug for several incidents so you don't have to shorten a treatment.

Doctors at least see MANY people with the same ailments every year, so they should be able to recognize the most common ailments and "have it down pat," which drug treats which ailment best, the doses per weight, the treatment duration, and possible drug interactions with the multitude of other drugs we may be taking. Most civilians do NOT have that discernment, but we have a kit full of drugs that might work if only we choose the right one?!
Unfortunately, there are some doctors that practice "polypharmacy." They prescribe multiple drugs because they don't bother to do the lab work needed to pinpoint the precise bacteria - if, in fact, it even is bacteria causing the ailment? If they prescribe a couple of antibiotics to "make sure they kill it," they may end up creating an environment where competing fungi and viruses can potentially thrive more easily due to reduced competition.
Then you really have a mess.
The best answer is to marry a pharmacist! (Or nurse, or doctor.)
Runner-up answer...have a good medical reference that includes proper use of common medicines.
AND as Amish Heart said, buy generics (animal drugs) at your feed store etc.
If you get the same doses as people use, you are getting the same stuff.
Just a LOT less expensive! You could also use multiple on-line pharmacies (if necessary) to request treatment for your carefully worded ailment. On-line pharmacies can also supply you with travel drugs commonly needed in certain countries. You could also ask your GP to supply you with these same travel drugs...it wouldn't hurt to ask.
Seriously though, prescriptions are there to prevent the unknowledgeable from hurting themselves...but also most certainly to feed the money monster (drug companies!)
EDIT: montanabill says "The jase kit comes with some pretty good written instructions on plastic coated cards identifying what drug for what affliction."
Good to know! Clear instructions probably make this a good (but pricey) option for many. Alternatives (like on-line stores) might be more work than they're worth!
