What have you done for spring gardens?

;)I ran out of room to plant all that I wanted. Dammit, now I'm going to end up tilling more area and creating more work! Somehow I like abusing myself with too many projects.

i got just enough room left for pinto.so im fiction to add to what i already planted.
I did notice that the greenhouse really needs some weeding badly. The problem is when you have a really big area you don't tend to take care of it as well as a small area. I guess I'll vacuum pack some of the seeds and put them in the freezer for next year. Anyways, here's to a successful growing season to us all! I'm allready looking forwards to all the home canned stuff next winter. It's so nice to have stuff all year long that you produced with your own hands.

yeah it is nice to have the vegetables you like most all year.especially when you grow them your self.i still need to learn canning, and get a vacuum sealer..

These are the three main vegetable gardens I work on now. The top is the first area I tilled up, with a lot of potatoes this year and some onions doing well so far. I planted a lot of other stuff in it, but it hasn't sprouted yet.
The second is the middle of the greenhouse. Plants are looking well, but the weeks are getting a little out of control!
And finally on the bottom is the chicken coop converted to another garden area. I haven't had chickens in there for about a year now, and am hoping the nitrogen is broken down enough now to grow well. Several things are sprouting so far, and it's rewarding to see again! Spring is definately my favorite time of year.

Those pictures look great! We have beans and corn and cucumbers out of the ground, as well as an odd okra and such, poking their heads up. The garden plots we made are doing well.

Got the garden area laid out and started putting in posts for the fencing. It will be 60'x120' in size. Next week my I'll build my wife some raised beds for her asparagus plants. It's still too early to plant anything else due to frost danger. Once the pump is dropped in the well I'll put in a trench to run water up to the garden area.

I've built several homes now, and the first thing I do is get a well. You need water for just about every step of building.
I like the garden size your planning. I ran out of room to plant, with 20x 80 roughly. I have a large grass covered area, with full sun, and will probably expand into it next year.

well.my black eye peas have come up.right along with what im thinking,is my pole beans.so i gotta start looking for canning recipes for them :D

Agreed. The well was put in several years ago, but never had a pump installed. The well is 650' deep so the pump alone will cost over $10,000. We also have a spring fed pond but it's a 1/2 mile away. My wife plans to plant her garden in 1/3 sections each year and rotate.

I put a pipe in the goldfish pond next to one of the garden plots to carry runoff water above a certain line under it for irrigation.

Most of my seeds have risen out of the ground now. It has become one of the most satifying things I've done . Not high excitement I admit, but growing your own food is gratifying. I started burying the potatoe plants today. It will be a multi day deal as I didn't get too far.

We moved so yesterday got grass removed dirt turned. Got other half to do but at least I have room for garden and I'm not having to grow them in pots.

Built a couple redwood 4'x10' raised beds for the garden. I don't have to time to put in the entire 60'x120' garden this year so this will have to do for now. About all I'm going to plant is hot peppers and tomato's and my wife is going to plant some asparagus.

I planted asparagus three times before it finally survived. It's taking over a corner in the greenhouse now. I hope to start harvesting nest year. It's a slow starting plant, but will produce for years to come.

well.my black eye peas, corn, and bread n butter cucumbers are coming along great..cantaloupe vines are there, and has flowers.but thats it,so far..

Lost 5 tomato plants last night from frost. The rest are doing good. Planted some raspberry and blackberry plants today.
I almost wish we had frost! It was brutally hot today. I'm watering constantly to keep stuff alive right now.

I picked a pile of onions and carrots yesterday. I got a handful on green beans and peas too. I also picked my first 4 ripe tomatoes and the first cucumber tonight! I need to pick and pickle some beets soon too. Only wish there were more hours in the day.

Got a late start on mine because we moved. So squash and zucchini and okra didn't do to good going to have to re plant them
But my tomatoes and green beans are doing great. Radishes are starting to green up.

We got a little rain last night and 42 this morning. Some light snow a little higher up in the mountains. Went fishing at a small lake not far from our place and it's still surrounded with snow drifts.

I actually don't know what the temp was today, but in 90's at least. I was working inside, but when going out to the parking lot to get supplies, it was so bad you would be drenched in sweat in a minute. Maybe I got soft from having an easy job for the last nine years!

It's almost 6pm here, and is still nasty hot here. I'm going out to dig and set two more posts in the ground for a covered parking spot for our equipment, but will wait another hour at least. Guess I'm just not as you as I used to be!

Ok since it has been awhile, this is what I didn't do. . . I didn't dig my two foot trenches that I did last year, and yes I paid for it. Since we hauled in so much dirt last year, I figured I didn't need to dig the trenches. Most everything drowned, . . . so had to replant after I built up. The beans that I normally dry loved the added water though and have gallons upon gallons of dried beans now.

Good to hear from you kid. Sorry about the fish pond, er, garden.... At least it was only the garden that drowned. I think lots of places in Texas got more water than they wanted this year. I saw way too many pictures of flooded homes.
I experimented with collards and turnips this year. They grew great, but I learned I don't like either! I'm hoping to get piles of potatoes soon, and everything else is doing pretty well. Each year I get a little better at actually getting food to eat, but I still feel like a rookie with farming. I am about to start pickeling beets too, (_one of my favorites). Good luck on the rest of the season.
