It depends where you are Frostbite, but we used to have a bore (in South Australia) and the water pumped up was sufficient if volume but too salty to use for irrigation.

The idea is to find a location that will have plenty of water. The desert is a bad idea. The entire SW of America (and Mexico) is currently fighting over water that barely exists. 40 MILLION Americans depend on that water. Why 40 million people thought moving to a desert where water has to be brought in was a good idea, tells you alot about the foolishness of many. I moved to the PNW 30 years ago specifically for it's abundance of water, natural beauty, and mild climate; in that order.

There is a great guy that sells 55g food grade barrels in my area for $10ea!!! I have 40 of them and filled four of them in a week with just the rain a few weeks ago; going into the rainy season.

As Dostoyevsky said, it depends. If it's in the Mississippi Embayment (upper and lower Mississippi Deltas) the yes.

Top aquifer is where irrigation water comes from. Not sure who has wells in the next two aquifers down or for what purpose. Our well (for domestic use) is like the one depicted. 1600 ft deep in the fourth aquifer down and under pressure. (artesian)

In Australia we call them bores. They can cost tens of thousands of $ to drill, and as mentioned by Dostoyevsky often the water is too salty to use. I chose a site with a river that has no irrigators upstream, and probably never will, the land being too steep for cropping, and most of it national park. I bought the property during an extended drought over 10 years ago, and it hadn't run dry then nor since.

I too have my own well " bore " but it isn't what I plan to rely upon with the worsening SHTF we find ourselves . This is because it requires electricity to pump the water up from the depths . My preparations involve living without the power grid . My non-power grid existence plan is to fall back on using a spring or a creek that is on my property . On standby is my solid rubber wheeled hand cart for fetching water . This cart is ready because without the power grid fuel stations and all stores will be no more , so that means also no motorized vehicles . --- Perhaps this scenario will never unfold , but I had rather be prepared for such an existence rather than find myself inadequately prepared .

I'm fortunate to have a well that taps into an artesian aquifer that's only 163 feet deep and I can pump it manually if needed.

Depends where one lives and how deep the well is. Also very much depends on RAIN. Our amount of rainfall here sits at 58” on average Annually.

Cats kill for fun and they enjoy doing it. To say they only do it because of instinct is like saying humans only mate because of instinct. Nature gave cats big brains and then felt sorry for the stupid humans. So it gave them hands to open doors for cats. I could see city slickers keeping their cats imprisoned. I live way out in the country. It would be very strange not to let them out. In fact I have been trained to do so.

Yes in populated areas it is ill advised to let cats out as there are people who gain enjoyment from killing, maiming and torturing cats. Though that behavior doesn't stop at the city limits. Your cats, do as you please. They are after all (by law) merely possessions.

I have worked for years learning food security. Water, energy and physical security is also important. I am married to an idiot who doesn't believe in prepping for anything...and I mean anything. So, my plan is to offer my knowledge and resources. I can feed you...my strength is producing soil that grows nutrient dense food. And that can be done faster than you can imagine. I have a pretty decent collection of seeds...everything from annual to perennial to pasture production. I also have pretty decent working experience in rooting plants. I have a pretty solid foundation of knowledge in a couple of areas that should SHTF I have something to bring to the table. And faith that the Lord will put me where I am needed most.

Humans do not own cats. It's the other way around. If very sick people want to murder cats, its no different than murdering any thing else that you are not going to eat. Cats are nearly perfect predators and warriors. So perfect that they can adapt to almost any climate, where they become a pest, wiping out many native species. Like humans that are doing the same thing. If you look at the DNA of cats and dogs, we have actually changed dogs. Cats are the same as they were tens of millions ago. Probably as most of you can relate , already on occasion dip into the stash when we find we need something that is not in the day to day household supply category . Things I got from the stash over the last few months was 1 box of table salt and 1 jar of pickling salt for making venison summer sausage . Being a prepper already occasionally pays off .

A good post that might help some . As for as myself , I would hate to know that I had to pull my 300+ deep submergible pump motor , and replace it with a hand pump all during a situation that was already dire . I suppose it is doable . I will continue with my plan to simply get my hand cart and water jugs and go to my spring for water . -- For those that have their own well but don't have the option of a alternative water source might want to consider putting a hand pump in the stash . What a tense moment that would be for someone and their family needing that water for survival , hooking up their hand pump under dire conditions and trying it out for the first time and praying it works . ---- After thinking about this for a while , realized there is a way to hook up a hand pump in conjunction with an electrical pump . I just don't recall exactly how this is done . I feel a bit stupid first thinking the electrical pump would have to be pulled . Perhaps someone can enlighten our members on this procedure .
