Hubby ans I were discussing where would be the best place ot be when everything goes down.We couldn't figure out because once you get there and settle in set up as sustainable as you can,in comes the the somebody or group to throw a wrnech in it.
9 times out of ten its the feds or local leaderships selling you out to he highrst biddrrs as in our springs here in N. Florida which is home to the largest body of natural springs in the world. now being sold to bottling company's like Coca Cola , or foregn owned Nestles Corp.Dryingup one spring after another, once gone they are goen FOREVER!
Thn you have The Corps of Engineers stopping river flows to set up dams and cut off water supply and lakes. Or soem foregnowned sugar plantation ruining the environment of another natural babitat.
Mayeb the money is in energy, like solar farms or wind towers? BLM and politiicians destroying National Forest and farm lands all over the nation.
So where do we go?

The lowest possible population density but where (if not retired) you can still make a living.
Alaska or Wyoming (or similar) come to mind.
I also like Appalachia due to many like-minded people ;)

One of my first posts in the old place was this. The answers seemed to completely miss the mark as far as the question was concerned, in my humble opinion.

Safety has many factors. If you are in a place where there are fewer people, such as Wyoming, you are less likely to have your house fire bombed like you could in the city. But, in Wyoming, you'd sure better be ready for winter with good shelter, plenty of fuel, water and food. You also better be prepared to deal with potential animal attacks.

Another safety factor would involve geography. What about earth quake zones? Some places are known to have more earth quakes than others.

Weather? There are places that are known for hurricanes, tornadoes and other crazy storms. I think that factors in to safety.

Man-made problems: nuclear power plants. It doesn't take them long off line to be a huge problem for everyone down stream from them.

Political: The last place on earth I would want to be living would be Seattle! There are many places like that that would be problem places to live. Finding places where laws are more conservative would certainly be safer.

I like Appalachia too,its lose and more like home, plus not quite as cold. We were discussing Appalachia but he is from coastal S.C. and doesn't like hills. I like hills mysrlf. Of course never been on high hills ,just foot hills.

Good points Weedy.I read about Arkansas and the Ozarks being a place where lots of retired military high ranks are retiring to,but thne I also read that the insects, wildlife there is terrible to deal with.
It sure is pretty there,

If I went north it would be Appapachia's. Wish my kids or grands would prepare but they like N.Georgia because its home. One married off to Texas so his family all lives there now, another bad place to be ,imo.

Alaska is paradise.......never to my knowledge in over 50 years of living here has there been "ONE" riot. I remember one "Peace March" when Richard (A-hole) Nixon came to Los'Anchorage, AK., it was peaceful, surprisingly large number of people, especially considering it was about 49 years ago.

Just for giggles here is my June 21'st 2020 Diary Entry.

Well.......everything is beautiful here in Paradise, Alaska. Even did some laundry today in five gallon buckets, it dried quick in a sunny upper 70's weather, gentle breeze. Just fixed my longevity medication, I'll check how sunny and pleasant tomorrow will be, while sipping my "longevity" tequila.

Even shaved my head today, well at least shaved the important parts, kind'a like those annoying optional monthly bills, I pay the important ones, the others can wait till next year. Hell, ain't like they'be a coming to give me any static, what with all those grizzlies in the yard, they ain't got the gonads to repossess a man's truck with grizzlies a'sleeping in the backseat.

Big shipment of food coming tomorrow from Amazon.com, UPS will deliver it to the bottom of my mountain, so I can add to my "Longevity" fitness program by backpacking the food up the mountain. I even washed the upper half of my body today, hope to get the bottom half next month, or before winter. life don't get better then this in Paradise, Alaska.

Not even any Grizzly problems today. I think an ugly dog, or ugly woman would go a long way towards mitigating the yard Grizzlies problem. Always been impressed what an ugly woman can chase off with her best smile.

Would be handy if Amazon.com had good dogs and ugly women available. Maybe just an ugly dog will work, they are cheaper to feed, and don't fart near the wood stove.....

I need to add that Anchorage and other largish Alaska cities, are little better then lower 48 cities. I do go to Anchorage once a year.....unfortunately. Need supplies.

There are many places in Alaska with abundant free food from nature, just reach out and harvest. There are places you could never starve to death.......you might get fat, but not starve.

Sour Dough I was giving you a heart smilie but had to downgrade you on that last sentence.
Funny you come on here today after having conversation with my daughter this morning about her my granddaughter who messed up her life with a sorry choice of a the ugly man as least charactor wise.
Told her not many men would want a ready made family of 5.Except some fool in Alaska who has slim pickens. Funny how synchronicity keep popping up,and thats not a joke.

Alaska is paradise.

I agree 100%. Alaska is THE place to be (or go) if SHTF. I highly recommend that anyone concerned about world events pack up and move there right now. Just be sure to follow the West coast and do not go through the Midwest or great plains region. It's awful there. Alaska, purely awesome!

Yes, and take a lunch with you, and a lantern in case you get there at night or in the winter. ;)

When Dawn and I finally decided we needed to go to a more "survivable" place to retire, we drew up a list (actually, several lists as our ideas matured) of things that our last home would have. First: which country? Although we had two other countries in mind, we quickly settled on the US for a variety of reasons.

We wanted a place which had a low density, lots of natural beauty and outdoor recreational options, a fairly politically/culturally homogeneous population, good weather, little potential impact from natural disasters, a place capable of having privacy and security, yet within a short distance of a modern infrastructure, and land that permits self-sufficiency.

We picked a place that neither of us had been to before (except for passing through on a road trip) and where we had no family, but were willing to bet on because it seemed to fit the bill for us. We moved to southern Idaho July of 2018 and believe we made the right choice.

One thing we didn't consider but we got as a bonus after we got here was the fact that more than half of the people (especially in the eastern half of the state) are pretty hard-core preppers, and they combine respect for one's privacy with a friendliness and willingness to help any neighbor who is willing to reciprocate.

I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else.

Funny~ Hubby and I have a piece of property we want to go look at in E ID. Not sure we can go this weekend so are looking at the weekend after the 4th.

Meer, I really think it depends upon you and MrMeer - We have a list of the things that are important to us. We both like mountains so that's an easy one for us. If you 2 decide what kind of area you prefer, the things that are "musts" for each of you and combine your lists. There will probably be quite a bit of overlap (how long have you been married? ;)) But there might be other things that each of you had not thought about. There will be some compromising for both. The piece of property we are looking at in ID meets many of the "qualifications" on our list. It is only the 2nd or 3rd property I've come up with in about 2 years of looking - still doesn't mean it's perfect. We'll have to see. I know our beliefs differ, but I really give it to God. When it's to happen it will and we will know it. That's how the best things have come about. Anyways, so I guess, I think any state could be the best depending upon who you are and your circumstances. If N. FL isn't suiting your needs, considering a move might be wise. Just find the best place for you 2.

If we were younger I'd been gone from here but too old to start over now. We've been married for 43 years now.The south and parts of the north is more like South Africa everyday, and its nto racist to say it ,it is just stating a fact.
On FakeBook today hubby neice who lives in Atlanta said while sitting at red light she saw a car of blacks try tor run over a white man crossing in crosswalk,no reason just hate.Attacking whites there all the tiem just not on news because its not PC.
I wish my daughters ,grandkis and hreat grands would get out of that state.Son and his kids ,,grandkids is in Texas which isn't much better.
I'd say move to Poland or Hungary but then the UN is working on those nations too.We are prey all over the world now.

Yep! I miss him as well and wonder if everything is okay with him.

He is missing on other forums that he and I share.......Miss him also.

When I mentioned Idaho (especially Eastern Idaho) being prepper central, it's because probably 75% of Eastern Idahoans are members of the Church*. Having a year's supply of food is pretty much standard with them; it's not an absolute requirement, but is strongly recommended. All my neighbors have their survival plans pretty sewed up, along with their own communications system through the Wards and Stakes. Plus they're all armed (at least all the ones I know).

Idaho has the second-highest percentage of Church members in the country; yet their plan is to share with their neighbors if the deal goes down, even if they're not Church members. This is nice, because we aren't Church members, although we've worked on our year's supply as well! They're also willing to help you with preps, which is a good thing if you're a n00bie.

* If you have to ask "which church?" you're probably not from the western U.S. LOL!!

Sounds like good people.

Rural with closer to zero population.
Regular growing season.
Readily available drinking water.
Fishing and hunting opportunities.
Readily available fire wood.
Off grid.

Unfortunately employment opportunities would be severely limited. No work from home because there would be no reliable Al Bore Internet. That means I'd have to be rich or retired. If retired then too tired to perform all the labor needed to sustain the homestead.

I can only recommend that it's not Iowa. Unless you can find a spring or artesian well, the water is undrinkable. The bugs are horrid in summer and it's butt cold and windy all winter.

Actually that might make Iowa a good place. The urban morons ain't gonna last long here...

What state would you pick ?
