If my understanding is correct radiation will come from radioactive material in the bomb blown to dust that didn't fuse. Also some nearby material will be given extra particles in their nucleus. They will try to return to a stable state and emit dangerous radiation in the process.

You are making me cry and drool!!! All illegal here!!
20 to life for possession...Besides, NO I would not rather have an AK...
I would prefer the Serbian version called the "Zastava". Better accuracy, longer life of the rifling, adapter for flash supressor, adapter for anti-tank and anti-personell rockets, handles the foreign ammo better and is not so sensitive for single shots while switched to full auto....best on the market.
Plus a TT (Takarov) 7.62 pistol and a CZ-75 in 9mm. All best on the market and fire-fight tested...
But I am only dreaming of my old toys from long ago days and will never get them back again...I'll go down with my knife in a gunfight!!!!

I was in a Wal-Mart and the power went out.
Except their check out lines still had power. Not even a hic-up. Kept right on going.
Not sure about the security camera system.

some of the chain stores have CAT diesel backups by their corporate code - Lowes have them around back >> I think it varies per region - I'd suspect there's more backups in the hurricane areas than most other parts of the country - pretty much a wash out around here without power ....

Oh, but AK's are so cool. You can drag them through the dirt and they'll still shoot. Osama just gave them a bad name. But the famous photo of him and his....his didn't have an adjustable stock.

The AR‘s are a lot better with dirt and such than they used to be. When I was in boot camp many years ago if the AR (M16) even saw a grain of sand it would jamb. They still aren’t as good at resisting crud and mud as an AK is but really have improved.
as far as a single defensive weapon goes, that’s a tough one. I have several that excell at one scenario or other. No one size anything fits all here.

If I had warning, I'd run around and unplug and remove batteries from everything I could. I keep all my expensive test gear and a few radios in my metal desk drawer. The main reason EMP devices ruin electronics is due to the gates of CMOS , JFET and MOSFET devices getting a pulse from the induced voltage on the circuit board trace. If every switch in a computer turns on at the same time, game over. A direct hit will simply ruin the gate insulation and it wont matter if all the sensitive devices turned on at once. An EMP or a CME will not be the end of electronics though, just the electronics that are connected to an antenna or unshielded. Most electronics have a memory battery, like my spectrum analyzer, so even though it is rarely ever connected to anything, that bugger hides in the desk drawer 100% of the time it is not in use.

I do not enjoy cleaning that much.
Talking about real, turn into the armory cleaning. Not just punching the bore and wiping down the BCG.

I had to spend a day helping out at the armory cleaning once. Had a trough with cleaning solution in it to submerge the whole weapon in. Great set up that made quick work of it. Not much fun after the 100th rifle though!

We had to make do with the cleaning kit in the butt stock.
After the second time of cleaning, I would then bring my own kit to make things go faster and easier.
