Brent, I tried growing tomatoes in pots for 3 years. Huge pots, new soil, but it just didn' work.
I’ve seen people grow huge tomatoe plants weighted down with fruit. I haven’t personally done it, but am sure you could google how to. I do know that when growing in pots it’s a lot more important to water and fertilize consistently. The ground is a lot more forgiving. I’ve had enough success in the greenhouse that I don’t use pots or containers.

Dang. . . its a trade off for you. I am assuming black walnut. Those are valuable trees with a pricey nut. Do you use produce enough walnuts to justify keeping it, or cut it down to grow the food crops that you need to can. Even then it would take a long while for all the roots to die off. It would be a hard toss up but I think I would do like you and keep.

I've cut down 2 trees, but still have 4 or 5 close to the gardens. I eat some walnuts, but no lumber mills Will take the trees because they dont know if there is any metal in them that would destroy a saw blade. I've called every where.

We use metal detectors to scan on some of the trees here before and after I drop the tree to check for spikes, cable, posts, nails and barbwire. I thought most mills do that now days, I know several do here.

Even the smaller portable bandsaw mills will often use a handheld metal detector. The walnut boards are so expensive that it’s worth the risk of ruining a blade even. I’m really surprised no one wants then. There must still be a lot of walnut in your area.

I am not happy with where I live. We live in the suburbs (cookie cutter village with postage stamp backyards). Our house is small only about 1500 feet, but it is enough for us. It is a nice home and a nice neighborhood, but we live way to close to a high school football stadium and we can hear the games and marching bands play at night. When we first moved here 17 years ago the stadium wasn't around and there were many open fields. Now it is getting populated. We also had a housing project open up near by. This was because the city got sued, or was going to get sued by some poverty association. They claim the highway divides the town from the have and the have nots, so they had to put a housing project on the "good side" to make it all better. The housing project is quiet and new for now, but in a couple of years, I predict it will go downhill quickly..those things seem to happen. There is a mass invasion right now of people moving from California to Texas. I hope they don't bring any ideas with them.

Having said all of that we would love to buy some land. Not a lot. 5 acres is all I need to insure my elbow space from neighbors. I would love to garden and have some chickens...and a bigger dog. I love my 5lb fur ball, but I would love to have a Border Collie. That isn't practical with a postage stamp backyard.

Even after you cut a tree, the roots keep the poison in the soil for years..

I have one black walnut on the property here. it’s only about 12”s across the trunk, but is too beautiful to cut down. It’s a little close to some figs and plum trees, but I will let what happens happen.

Yes, 100' from drip line covers a lot of garden space.

I am not asking where anyone is at,,,the question is are you happy with your location

I am evaluating my location,I am surrounded by private property and every year I am invaded by out of town hunters, and I am to close to a nuclear target to suit me,so I am looking around, and I have found this property,,,,214 acres with a log cabin surrounded by national forest, the closest house is 1.5 miles thru the woods away,it is about as isolated as one can get,30 miles from a town with any size to it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Have you looked at West Texas?
