I don't think I am putting myself out on a limb when I say that only 2% or less of the 50.5% are 'ready' to evac on any given notice. Sad
Have you made that forum post? A amazing $50 bug out bag would be a cool post. Especially for beginner preppers.I can put together a decent BOB for about $50. Even someone working at McDonalds can do that. Nobody says you have to do it all at once. Even with a dedicated plan, I have things broken up over 5 years, because I know I can't afford it all at once. Even then, it is likely to take more than 5 years. But, I'm not getting any younger. I wish my kids could see the threat as a bit more real, but they are a product of their generation. Even when smart, they have the attention span of a cocker spaniel.
It is funny you say that. The area of SF I live in actually has a practice siren that goes off every tuesday. I am not sure if that is the reason though. I heard a rumor it is actually from the cold war.the siren would be sounded if an accident happened, anyone within 1 mile of the dockyard were given tablets(I forget what) to take to counter the affects of the blast but that's as far as any civil contingency went.
I agree, I think spreading knowledge is extremely important.whilst Bug out and GHB kits have their uses, they have a very limited timescale, don't get me wrong I have them myself but in a serious SHTF/TEOTWAWKI the stuff we need to amass are skills and the knowledge how to use those skills. resources will eventually all get used up but if we can TEACH people survival and homesteading skills that will enable them not only to survive but to ADAPT and ultimately THRIVE.
This might be one of the most important posts on this thread in my opinion.knowledge is first and foremost, without knowledge even with the right gear wouldn't be much good, it be no different then applying a mickey mouse band-aid to a arterial hemorrhage, it makes me wonder though, how many preppers know how to change a car tire? how many preppers can carry 35lbs of gear 10 miles? how many preppers know the difference between a cattail and a iris in the spring? note, one of them will kill you! how many preppers know what a yew tree, hemlock bush looks like? how many preppers know the difference between a hemlock bush and a hemlock tree? These are just some of the basic questions that need be known before fielding a bug out bag, you have to know the land you are going to too otherwise you will learn real quick the meaning of 'dire straits'

Truth is, there really are natural disasters and other issues that don't require paranoia, conspiracy theories, or foil hats to grasp.
"God helps those who help themselves"I have to say some days I hate the prepper name that we all get. just 30 years ago this was a normal way of life for people. My mom always had a basement full of home canned goods and everything else that would be needed. We never knew if crops might fail, or a really bad winter would occur so therefore we made sure that we had enough just in case. But that was the way that people lived and survived. Now it's all go to the store aily and when something bad happens no one has a backup plan in place.
However I hear one thing daily that so ticks me off. People say that preppers are crazy, and that God will save them when something bad happens. I am sorry but you can pray until you are blue in the face but God isn't going to hand you a table full of food. People think that faith will save them. Ever notice how when something really bad happens dead bodies are always found in the churches??? Volcano erupts head for the church, God will save us, Quake happens head for the church, God will save us. Yeah right. The only one that will save me during a SHTF scenario is me, not God. Sure prayer will help calm me down a bit, but he sure isn't going to hand me free food, and T. paper.
I'v never heard any preacher tell anyone not to prepp or prepare for emergency's . The BIBLE tells us that GOD allows it to rain on beleaver and nonbeleaver alike and when part of a temple fell on worshipers the Temple leaders were teaching that they had done somthing wrong when that was not the case it was simple that bad things can happen to anyone . I wonder who all these people saying not to prepare for emergency's are and where did you hear them giving such advise ?
"God helps those who help themselves"
The floodwaters rose, but one man stayed in his house. As his neighbors begged him to leave, he replied "God will save me."
The waters flooded the first floor and as the man was waiting on the second floor for God to save him, a boat pulled up outside the window. "Hop In" said the man in the boat. "No, God will save me" replied the man.
The waters rose up to the second floor and the man got on the roof. Another rescue boat pulled up but the man still refused to get in the boat, saying "God will save me."
As the floodwaters rose up to the roof, the man climbed up on the chimney. Just then a helicopter showed up and dropped a ladder to him. He waved the helicopter off shouting "GOD WILL SAVE ME!"
The floodwaters rose above the chimney and the man was swept away and drowned.
When he got to heaven he saw God and asked "Why didn't you save me?"
God said: "What are you talking about? I sent you TWO BOATS AND A HELICOPTER!"
