I have the means and op to buy a large chunk of land and was thinking of building a few cabins and bunkers throughout the property all self sufictant and solor wind and seprtics the hole nine Ive ran the numbers and its actualy pretty cheap in grand sceam of things but If I did this I would be setting on a small town thats empty

Not in a million years. We are set up here to take people on and let them set up their own area, but they will never have the option to own. This is how I see it, I want to know who is on my property, I don't like surprises like someone bringing their bff's great uncle and his eleventy-seven kids and ex-wives. My kids call me a benevolent dictator, but they know that they will always have a place here. In fact, my oldest and her 2 roommates built a small cabin down over the hill from us so they wouldn't be under our feet constantly. Hubs says I'm mean, I tell him that I'm not 'Feed the Hungry'. Anyway, my two cents. I want the control of my surroundings, I don't want to have to worry about wife beaters, kiddie fiddlers, thieves, drunks, druggies, and just general no account being around my family. Got a hanging tree all picked out for the ones that want to do things like that.

No. When it hits the fan, even families will turn on each other. Plus, it leaves it too open to conflicts and conflicting ideas. Who becomes the leader, who decides what happens, sorry, too many things can go wrong,

BUT,

On the flip side, strength in numbers, more people means more things they can do.....................................................................

Still vote No.

I was thinking the same pros and cons but in the event of a red dawn scenario I would be greatly out numbered trying to keep my land safe alone one of me for 50 acres yea I may have to find me some very close friends or start a cult lol

If I buy land it is for the preservation of my family. Will I take in strangers? hard to say. I am not the most trusting person on the planet. And I can only imagine how hard it will be to trust people in a post SHTF world.
I do have some friends and we have discussed buying adjoining parcels of land, but we aren't going to purchase land together.

I have no problem if someone like minded and I trusted were to buy property close to mine, but I don't want them to think they own part of mine. Worked too hard for what has our name on it to let someone just decide that they can do things the way they want to do them. I'll be honest, I can be a high-toned bitch when I'm crossed and I really don't like to deal with stupid people that say they'll do one thing and then sit on their ***** and wait to be served.

Just ignore me, was up most of the night with a sick kid (the goat variety), so I'm bitchy today.

to me it sounds like a great idea. although i'd be selective about who gets in...

i grew up playing games like sim city, always dreamed about actually doing it for real.
it would be my own little paradise, my own town made up of like-minded individuals, we'd have our own system separate from the government's. i figure the government won't go nuts as long as we don't do anything major ot piss them off.

buy a couple thousand acres of undeveloped wilderness, set up my own town/village miles away from big cities and curious eyes. at first it's just a group of people living together. then as the 'group' grows we'd start our own economy, own rules, etc. a micro nation.

I have no idea what sim city is, so just going to say that it's going to be hell of a lot different than a game if you are dealing with folks on your own property. Can't just squash them with a car, sic a zombie on them, or whatever you do in sim city to get rid of people... well I guess you could now that I think about it. ;) Just do it far enough away from your own space so the flies don't bother you.

I don't really remember the details but there was an episode of doomsday preppers on season one where a guy built a really well thought out underground bunker community and was selling the units for over a million a peice!

If you can buy cheap and add improvements that make it more valuable you could make a ton! Maybe have it divided into parcels and just sell the parcels. or keep it as one and lease the cabins. Money, money, money! I would imagine if you end up not being comfortabel with the residents you would have enough profit to set yourself up someplace you want.

Just make sure you drum up some leads and know what people want and what they are willing to pay before you spend too much.

yea i seen that show also and when I lived in Indiana which is were they are I visited and for the cost im not interested but im thinking more like a campground style set up cabins and small villige type set up more like the town in the movie trimmers small self suficiant off grid town

LOL, I kind of have that now. The little town I live outside of has a population of 87!

My greatest fear would be people who wont pull their own weight. This seems to be a common problem in anything resembling a commune. Another was already mentioned and that is the "wrong" kind of people or family moving in. We have and RV and if we had to leave our home and property, we wouldn't mind moving on land with other RV owners and share the work involved to survive. Anyone who created a problem (drunks, perverts etc) could be forced to leave - at the point of a gun if necessary.

I agree with most of your guys that I wouldn't want others to be around. The more people, the more problems. I just want to take care of myself and my family.

I said yes because I don't want to be all on my own when the shtf. I need other people if for nothing but to keep from going crazy. I guess that comes from being around others all my life working as a nurse. Being retired now due to health reasons is the only reason I'm not nursing and I miss it like hell. I'd like to think I could bring something to the table in a small tight knit community when it all goes to hell. Sure your going to have those that don't pull there weight but you can always boot them out if the need arises. We all if we were to admit need other people and even more so when it all goes to hell in a hand basket. Nothing says you can't be selective in who you allow into the community. You'd be crazy not to be. I can tell you this if you can make it a year with just you and say your immediate family then your gonna be the lucky one. People do need other people one way or another. Just my thoughts. I guess I thinking more on the lines of our mental health and we're gonna need all the help we can get to maintain that.

It is all about pulling a medium sized group of friends that you trust with your own life, hard to find but they are out there. Train hard, and fight like tigers. Be ready to sell yourself to take out 10 of them, and they'll move on to greener pastures.

I wouldn't want to live in isolation. I suppose it could be done.... but forever? No way.

To me I think it would be ideal to have a community of very close families. I cant say why other than I couldn't imagine my wife and I alone for a long period of time. Not because we wouldn't get along, but because I would fear for our sanity.

My wife and I own several hundred acres in the mountains (in a western state) totally surrounded by national forest and is several miles off a little traveled road. Its behind a locked forest service gate too. The closest neighbor is about 5 miles away. We would like to find a couple of people that would be interested in joining with us in developement of this property. The property has timber, medows, springs, a pond, lots of wildlife and a well. We looked long and hard for a place like this.

I don't play well with others and prefer to do most things myself, to be honest lazy people wouldn't bother me as they would keep me busy and I actually like being busy, its the lazy people who know the least yet still have to know it the loudest that would drive me crazy.

If you do build this community I would build it out of preppers and prepper families only, at least you know your bringing in people who are like minded, establish a hierarchy before SHTF, who is the best for first aid, who can hunt the best, who has had experience in leadership? it might be your town, but you may have a better leader who isn't you, are you prepared to hand over the reigns to the best benefit of your custom built community?

Isolation is unhealthy. Man is a social animal. As much as I love my husband and as good as we get along, I wouldn't want to live in isolation with him.

You're talking about something like a commune of the past. Are you planning to sell lots or just allow people to build and maybe charge them a small rent?

No, not a commune. We bought the place hoping that family would be interested, but they're not. We've considered selling an intrest in the property to a couple of people, drawn up by a lawyer of course, instead of splitting off lots.

I think the nervousness with sharing the same land is kind of the same as being a roommate off a lease, there's always that risk of not getting along or having a dispute and getting kicked out. Regardless of contracts since they won't matter much when SHTF. With all that being said I still want to one day I hope to find another family to prep with. Just not financially able yet.

That's something you really need to think about because as Haloray says, there could be falling outs - then what? You must also consider jobs in the area. Is it so isolated that any job paying a living wage is a long long commute? Is the land and climate severe with a short growing season and closed passes due to snow? Would or could the average person or prepper want to live there self-sufficiently? The mountains can be a pretty harsh place to survive.

if i owned the needed land where i could choose who lived there and who don't..i'd pick the ppl that i feel/beleave that i could trust, benefit from, and do thier share of helping out with things to do.be it family and friends alike..then i'd sit down with all of them to explain things to them while makeing sure that (they) know that i have the final say so on things no matter what.and if they dont agree to that.then they aint welcome there when the shtf..pluse what old anorak would do is a good idea.let at least some of them have homes on the land..but not sell it...have the homes spread out,not to far apart and where the property line can be watched at any given time..and have all minral and water rights as well..drill wells and have the needed water pumps installed,in which electric and hand oprated pumps will included as well..clear out the areas that needs clearing for a better range of fire.cut what trees needed to stock up on fire wood, but leave what trees i can at same time..

I don't think many people would want to spend their money building on someone else's land. It would be costly or impossible to move the cabin or house in case of a falling-out. Or if the owner of the land should die for some reason. Would his/her heirs sell the land or allow the people to remain? If so, get it in writing. There's a lot to think about on both sides.

good point kitty..make a will for the one or two person(s) you trust the most to inherit the property.and make it completly clear in the will that the person(s) in queston has to keep the intire amount of property, and not sell/rent any of it.and continue to allow the ppl already liveing there, gets to keep liveing there as is as long as they live by the set of rules/laws..yeah it can be costly building or moveing a home..and there will be diffrences.but thats so true in every day life aready.and you pointed about jobs in a post.live close enough to a city where it's not to far to drive each way.for example only,no more then 20-30 miles each way if that far.and hopefully have a good reliable and dependable vehicle to drive..
