So we do metal including blacksmithing.
I acquired an old journal in very poor condition some months ago and haven't really had a chance to sit and go through it being careful with the pages etc.
Finally did so today. Interesting!

So that first part~
Blacksmithing: Plow iron, sharpening, & shoeing $12.28.
I told Hubby next time I need a plow iron, implements sharpened and a horse shawed, I will pay him $12.28

That’s not much for a plow - not sure of price today. Sharpening, we charge $10 per tool. Horse shoeing is about $100 per head.

I know a ferrier or two, one here, one back home. Have met smithys too; at festivals where they do it for "fun," to amaze people with their skill and ironworks. I miss home for reasons like that.

I would read the invoice as plow irons, perhaps bolt on shares

We refer to “the smithy” because it’s a section of the shop.

I love old journals. They reveal so much more about the average person than any book. This one was specifically what was spent on labour from 1863-1868 (going on memory, it's not in front of me).

my guess is that blacksmith work was fairly valuable compared to now, but it will be back to producers and makers being far more valuable than politicians and entertainers and fairly soon

I'm in the process of building a small blacksmith shop. I'm building it in 3 phases, because of the weather.
Phase 1 will be 12×16, phase 2 will be 10×16 and will house my welder, air compressor, etc, and phase 3 will be an 8×12 lean-to on the back for more storage.
I have the roof up on phase 1 and have started on framing. I've got the 1×12 fir siding on order. Once I'm a little further along I'll start buying the equipment. I'm thinking about a 2 or 3 burner propane forge, a 150 pound anvil, new vice, etc.
I'm going to wire the building in two separate circuits. The lights and a couple outlets will be on solar with battery bank and inverter. Another circuit will be wired to a generator and be for the drill press, grinder and additional outlets.

Here's what I've got done so far on phase one of the blacksmith shop. I have the lumber for framing and siding, buried under the snow. Once the weather clears up some I'll start on the framing.
