Back on topic: a song about lefse.
The book is available on Amazon and maybe on other used book sites. https://www.amazon.com/Harsh-Grief-...refix=harsh+grief,+gentle+hope,aps,186&sr=8-2I found the poem.
"O Lutefisk" by Steven...
Languishing lonely on my plate
Everything else I already ate
Quivering pile so clear and so near
Please - Can't I wash it down with just one more beer?
They say Vikings carried the stuff on their ships
But guaranteed, had they had anything else
It would never have touched their lips
Cod-soaked lye sitting in front of me
Come on now, think - I need a strategy
Oops - it slid right off my plate
Eat it, Caesar, you canine ingrate
What? "No, Mom, I don't want any more"
As I grind helping number one into the floor
Tradition!
(I'm posting this in honor and remembrance of the author, my father's second cousin's son, who died in his taxi cab 34 years ago. A random fare simply got in his cab and shot him, then left and didn't even steal from him. He was 30. His mom wrote a book about dealing with the grief called "Harsh Grief, Gentle Hope". It is a deeply Christian perspective. If any of our members are dealing with the loss of a loved one, especially a sudden or violent loss, I really recommend this book if you can find it. It will help get you through the hard times...)
I should have added this link earlier. Its been a bit of a busy day.
I've caught a lot of different types of cod over the years, mostly black cod and it's never been oily, on the other hand a great deal of the salmon I've had has been oily. The lutefisk that I've eaten was only oily when it was soaked in butter, which my grandmother called goose grease.I look at it this way. Cod is an oily fish. When you mix oil (or fat) and lye, what do you get? Every homesteader should know the answer to this question.
Maybe I just have assumed all these years that is was oily because of the cod's liver oil my mother gave me as a punishment. I suppose it was better than a bar of Lifebouy soap. At least I didn't go blind from soap poisoning.I've caught a lot of different types of cod over the years, mostly black cod and it's never been oily, on the other hand a great deal of the salmon I've had has been oily.
