This is my favorite fire hack. I have made several of these and have them in all of my bags.
The one thing I do differently is I don't use a Vaseline soaked cotton ball. I use two Q-Tips. I cut them in half and push them down into the Chapstick @ 12-3-6-9. The lid still fits on the Chapstick, and now you have at least four chances, and they are not as messy as the cotton ball.

Very interesting. Not the fastest method, but it looks like it would work if it was a SHTF situation. Thanks for sharing.

Yes. I've known for years about using muscadine vines to filter water. When I tell people about it, they give me that "look" LOL.
