BUGATTI TYPE 35 - CT. 2006
Back in the mid 70's I garage built a 289, port matched the intake and exhaust, TRW cam and headers, I ran a 500 Holley two barrel carb and the 62 Fairlane had just the 8.8 rear with 3.5 gears, the transmission was a T-85 three speed, would have loved to have had the top loader 4 speed but it turned out to be a good combination, it ran like a wild ape and got 20-22 mpg in elevations from mile high Denver to 13,000 foot passes. That engine was one of the best starting engines I've ever owned, just tap the key and it was running. the only problem I ever had was when a guy asked me to really get on it and I blew the ring and pinion, if I would have been smart I would have gotten the 9" rear end, I really didn't make that much money at that time, so that car was a poor mans hot rod. I could do 130 mph, that's not too bad for a cheap back yard build. I would have like to have gotten a Falcon Sprint as the Fairlane was heavy, 3,500 lbs., the Sprint would have been close to what your 65 Mustang weighed.I had a 65 fastback... it flew! I built the 350 HP 289 (actually it was bored to 292) 4 speed toploader and 4.11 rear gears. It only weighed 2500 pounds. It was my first real car...
