i got az dumb question about cigars.
my dad was a long time pipe and cigar smoker. when he passed i inheritied a bunch of his stuff and that included 6-7 boxes of different kinds of cigars and all his pipes.

i dont know what to do with them and dont know anyone who smokes cigars. im thinking of donating them to the local FD guys.

is that ok or should i just toss them?
i wondered if someonecwould enjoy them or not worth it.

any suggestions?

It would depend on how old they are and how they were stored. If they are dried out they would not be very good. Is there a cigar store close to you? You could take a couple to the store and they might test them; light them up and take a few drags to see if they are still good.

I don't know anything about pipes. If there is a tobacco store near you that sells pipe tobacco you might take a couple of pipes and some tobacco in there and they could tell you what you have, and if there is any value.

It's been awhile since I've had a decent cigar, besides the little conac dipped AL Capones. I'm going to the farm supply store tomorrow. One of the towns that I pass through has a tobacco store. I'm sure that I can find some very good smokes there. I'll pick up a few boxes of AL Capones too. I've got a bottle of 12 year old Balvenie single malt scotch that has been asking to be opened.

Can I come along for the ride, and the cigars, and the scotch? :great:

Pipes can bring in some money depending on the brand/shape etc.

I am a fan of the Al Capones. The cigarillos that I’ve been enjoying are very similar. An off brand that I got from Thompson cigar. Great for a smoke if you don’t have a lot of time.

thankyou morgan and backpacker.
thinking about the things youve mentioned, there is a tobacco store in the next tow, i can check with them.
but also thinking, no they were not in a humidor, just in their wood or cardboard boxes, most wrapped in plastic, but not all. and id bet they all are at least 5-10 years old.

his pipes, i think i will find the proper way to clean them then save them. someday i might meet someone whod want one. wait--is there some guy thing that a guy never uses another guys pipe? is it rude to offer someone a used pipe? thought i better ask.
thanks yall

Hehehe, I’m positive that most men would not want to be accused of smoking another man’s pipe.

That said, aged pipes (so to speak) are better. Plus those tobacco inhalers were made better back in the day, better draw, smoother burn, etc. My favorite pipe is sixty years old (I’m not that old yet), but it is perfect for me.

Think in craftsmanship terms here. When a significant portion of the population smoked pipes, they had to be made better. Now, you can pick up something cheap or pay a lot for a better brand, but I’d bet that something made a half century ago was made better, just my two cents.

BTW, I own about 5 good pipes, my second favorite is made of clay, really hard to find those now days…

Some of those pipes may be hand carved briar worth serious cash, I'd look them up before dumping them!

If you want to look and list them, I will be happy to send some sources for what we pipe guys call "Estate Pipes'. Value depends on Pipe maker, age, condition, and "desirability"

IE, with no recommendations or endorsements is Best Selection of Estate Tobacco Pipes — Smokingpipes.com

I have others if you care to pursue them, just let me know.

Got home from work and grabbed some porch sitting time with a CAO BX3 6x60. Time to unwind.

Got a small order in yesterday. I've been trying to find some BX3s in 5x50 size. Nobody has had then in stock. Finally found 4 (all they had) on Famous Smoke shops website. They are now sitting in the humidor for a while

I'd like to find some good old pipes.
I've been thinking about growing some types of tobacco next year
Old ones are nice, they are broken in :). Hard to date unless you are really into pipes, and I'm not.

For experimenting with tobaccos and learning, it's hard to beat a corn cob. They smoke fine, easy to care for and if you drop it or break it it's not as painful as a high dollar Dunhill.

That said, if you want to buy a top brand/name check Smoking pipes, or on Ebay look for "PipeStud". Both are stand up dealers.

I've ordered some stuff from Smokimgpipes. Another couple places are The Country Squire and The Pipe Nook.

The number of pipes is mind blowing. And some of the fancy hand made ones are way too pricey
