DIY stove.

I like the cardboard wick. I've made a bunch of those as well. But, you need something that holds your cookpot above the flame, like a folding stove.
In the Boy Scouts, we hunted rocks to hold our can of whatever.
 
I just use a small wood burning stove these days. Burning whatever scraps of twigs I scrape up off the ground. My first two of these were folding stoves, the one I recently bought is roughly a 4"x4"x4" cube that doesn't fold. Sometimes I use a Trangia alcohol burner in these stoves, in that case the stove serves as a wind break and a pot holder. I don't use these as much as I used to since I seldom go hiking/backpacking/camping any more. But they're good as emergency backups at home in case the power goes out (we have an electric stove, I envy y'all that have gas stoves).

I have a 4 by 4 stove that folds flat and you can burns sticks or other flammable things in it. I do have a few different kinds of camp type stoves because two is one and one is none.
