We always used rolled up corrugated cardboard. Way easier than shaving a stick with a pencil sharpener.

I like the cardboard wick. I've made a bunch of those as well. But, you need something that holds your cookpot above the flame, like a folding stove.
In the Boy Scouts, we hunted rocks to hold our can of whatever.

I just use a small wood burning stove these days. Burning whatever scraps of twigs I scrape up off the ground. My first two of these were folding stoves, the one I recently bought is roughly a 4"x4"x4" cube that doesn't fold. Sometimes I use a Trangia alcohol burner in these stoves, in that case the stove serves as a wind break and a pot holder. I don't use these as much as I used to since I seldom go hiking/backpacking/camping any more. But they're good as emergency backups at home in case the power goes out (we have an electric stove, I envy y'all that have gas stoves).

I have a 4 by 4 stove that folds flat and you can burns sticks or other flammable things in it. I do have a few different kinds of camp type stoves because two is one and one is none.

For friends and family I have made a dozen or more backyard HOBO stoves out of old 20lb propane tanks... Not good for ..back pack portable.. but very useful.. Many pots of coffee, tea, hot dogs and marshmallows have been sacrificed over one of these stoves..

I hear the quart-sized propane cans are good for making tab stoves.
I've made many HOBO stoves out of scrap 20lb propane bottles and scrap Mr Balloon bottles.. The propane size seems to work a bit better than the smaller bottles..

Never thought of making a stove out of disposable propane bottles.. Might work OK for an individual camping size bottle stove... Might have to try that...
