Yes, the old saying was: "If you want to know if you have a good name for your dog, stand on your back steps and shout it at the top of your lungs 5 times".It has long been my understanding that dog names should be only one syllable long. This especially if more than one dog is in area. If training hunting dogs for example.......
Joe or Jake or Bob
I have had troubles with one syllable names in the past. Getting confused and calling my son Shep and my dog Chris was not popular with either of them.It has long been my understanding that dog names should be only one syllable long.
He knows his name and lives up to it!!Our red heeler pup is named Rowdy.
Dogs can have extensive vocabulary, IF you teach them! My Mom had a wonderful Golden that knew the name of about 90 toys, because she taught her!! Not one syllable names for the toys! A lot is up to the owner and the dog's intelligence!!It has long been my understanding that dog names should be only one syllable long. This especially if more than one dog is in area. A man and his two sons in their mid 30's they each have two working dogs; they are highly trained water retrievers. When the three men are waterfowl hunting together with six dogs, they need the dogs to have one syllable names. Or it is total confusion. Example: one of the hunters' steps to the edge of the water. He calls, "Jake heel" then he shows Jake which bird he wants Jake to fetch. Commands: Jake fetch. Jake does. The other five dogs sit quietly waiting their turn. There might be seventeen dead birds floating. Each dog is sent to retrieve a specific bird.
If the dog is having trouble finding his bird, his master can call the dog's name give the dog hand signals to tell the dog where the bird is. All this in wind and rain and snow. There might be several dogs in the water at the same time fetching. It is possible each dog could be getting additional instruction.......while ignoring commands being given to other dogs.
It is a beautiful thing to watch.
