That description fits most terriers anyways, lol. No doubt, certain breeds of dogs have traits that are common to them. But they are animals and have their own minds. I’m suprised about the collie, never saw one that wasn’t friendly.we lost our terrier ***** 2 years ago, tried to find another but haven't found the right fit yet, many modern dogs are not like what we had in the past, very inbred and highly strung.
Pits , Rott's , German Shepard's you have to watch while they are growing up to see how they act around strangers . Doberman's are very smart but unpredictable . Chows have anger issues . Iv seen individuals from these breeds be big pets and some that would attract on sight . Iv seen Chows that would bite anyone including their owner .
That’s actually not uncommon for a dog raised by white people to be aggressive towards blacks and a dog raised by black people to be aggressive towards white people. Apparently they aren’t too different from most humans unfortunately. At least with dogs you can say they aren’t smart enough to overcome their fear of anything different.I've got no use for an aggressive dog, and wouldn't have a potential biter or a barker around. That being said, our English Lab is very protective of my wife and wouldn't let a man near her if I wasn't around. He's also a racist mutt. He will bark at a certain demograpic of the population....
Agreed! All trained dogs can be very useful, tactical chihuahuas included.I think almost any healthy dog could be an asset post SHTF, but the key is recognize the dog as an individual and tailor your expectations accordingly.
For example, I live with my girlfriend who has a small maltipoo . . . not much larger than my cat.
Obviously, she can't be a guard dog that attacks on command, and would be useless for hunting.
However, she's very alert, she's territorial, and works as an excellent alarm system. She lets us know about people, other animals, etc. that come near the house, so she's a great burgler alarm. Being small, so only consumes a little food when compared to a large breed.
A friend at work has a golden retriever that seems to have excellent instincts for hunting. This dog is also very friendly and sociable, and would be very helpful post SHTF for traumatized children, and would probably help with depression and PTSD, yet I wouldn't expect her dog to be a good watch dog unless you want the intruder to get licked to death.
And so on.
In other words, I think any dog could be an asset, but how the dog would function depends on what kind of niche you give it.
Sorry to hear that. I know they are family. Our Chihuahua pasted away a couple weeks ago . She was old and got a leaky beart valve that was filling her lungs with fluid . She lasted a couple weeks and fought s hard fight with it .
That just leaves Us the black lab for now .
Doesn't surprise me at all.Our last dog was a Chinese Shar-Pei. That damned dog ruined it for us and dogs. No dog like qualities at all. When you fed him he acted like a cat, sniffing the food a while first before deciding whether to eat any. The only thing he liked to do was tear up my garden. He ran away and we didn't look for him. We never got another dog after that.
My favorite dog was a female English Setter. She was actually my sister's dog but I took care of her while my sister was in college. The dog flunked out of obedience school and was sent home, LOL. But when I trained her she was very easy to train. You only had to let her know what you wanted. And she had all the right instincts for a bird dog. Froze like a statue the first time she ever caught wind of a covey of quail. She would retrieve ducks out of the water like a lab without any training or being told what to do. She just seemed to always know what to do. In the woods she would work a pattern never getting very far from me. And I swear that dog could read my mind.
My terriers are loyal to only who ever feeds them, if they get out they never make any effort to return, in the passed they have escaped and been found over 20 miles away.I like my dogs more than most people I’ve known. Their loyalty and love never changes.
My real dogs, the two outside, know where their bread is buttered. Both are great friends. Noe the one that lives inside and sleeps in the bed, well, if you have food you’re her best friend.... I think it’s really not a good thing to spoil an animal too much. Kids either. My terriers are loyal to only who ever feeds them, if they get out they never make any effort to return, in the passed they have escaped and been found over 20 miles away.
I’ve never had the breed but everything I’ve read about them was extremely positive. They do eat a lot and have shorter lifespans though. If you take the time you can train most dogs to do what you want, some breeds just do it naturally though. My Daughter has 2 Great Pyrenees . They are great dogs and take care of Her chickens and very protective of Their Family . People they know can pull up get out of their car and no problem . Someone they do not know pulls up they had better stay in their car until the dogs decided its ok .
