Good for you and family, when we moved to our homestead it took 17 years to build our basic home and move out of our 17 foot travel trailer and now we are enjoying our paradise home, sort of went through hell and high water but it was all worth it.

When we moved, wife asked how I was going to do it?
"I'm going to rent a big dumpster and pitch a bunch!"
Wife decided she was in charge of moving the small items and I was to get a group of friends together to move the big stuff.

Second time in my life of over 30 moves I'm hiring movers. My wife and I have very different ideas on how to pack a house. My method is to go room to room packing everything in said room and labeling each box to the corresponding room in the new spot. Then organize as I unpack in the new home.

My wife however, has picked a specific spot for each item in the new house subject to change upon arrival and wishes to pack each item from across the house into boxes that may or may not be properly packed for each destination in the new home. This method consists of a lot of talking and planning with very little doing.

Wisely, I now just sit back and take orders while she talks her way through it while making sure to nod my head and agree at the correct points in her ramblings. It is frustrating my method which is much akin to the apaches hitting the trail with a quickness.

I heard a few women talking about moving with the help of men in their lives--husbands, sons, others. When the truck is full and there are some items that didn't make the cut, evidently they are usually Christmas items.

I was dreaming about retiring to Arizona. Wife asked (to put a damper on my dreams) how expensive will it be to move all of our (her) stuff, we couldn't afford the move. I said moving would be simple, what didn't fit in the truck or utility trailer would be sold and/or left behind.

Be careful who you pick for the moving company. Some are real scammers. I'd go with someone local where you can walk in to talk to them about service or issues.

Using a company I recommend to my clients as a real estate agent. As they get a good bit of biz from me they put their A team on it. My wife's family has also used them 4 times in the past for significant moves. These folks are squared away. But you're right. There are some companies out there I wouldn't trust at all. Much less their crews knowing where I live.

The local news has done stories on moving companies that have really messed up people's goods. What some people have experienced with moving companies is absolutely incredible. I believe that it is one job that felons can get and that tells you something.

Well, I haven't been too active here in the past couple months as I was tired of not living the homesteading life this community was designed to support. Kinda felt a little off hanging around as a suburban prepper with not one chicken to my name .

This is about to change. While not moving out to the country as much as I would like, my wife and I found a nice tucked away spot on almost 9 acres just far enough out of and hidden away from our populated area for my comfort level while staying in reasonable distance from family etc.

I am very excited. Didn't want to say anything till I closed so as not to jinx things but couldn't help myself. Now I get to put all the knowledge I've been soaking up from you folks for years into practice. Expect some questions as I embark on this journey with my wife and will update as we go along

Appraisal good!!! Walking into equity even . Getting so excited. I might have to camp out in my own woods for a day or two just to let it sink in that the spot is mine to care for.

We did that when we moved here from your neck of the woods. Only we camped fro 4 months in tents,it was a wondeful life. Except when storms came and lightening popped all around us on the ground and tent laid down on us from winds.
I had a tent for kitchen, a tent for bedroom and one for storage. Horse and donkey, 3 dogs, and 2 cats. Shooting continuosly,prayed they hit their aim and not us.

I have found that the phrase "you can never have too much ammo" only applies when you arent trying to move it all in one go.

I have never heard anyone say, "I had too much ammo" after a gun fight.
I have heard folks say they were running low...

Rules for gun fights:
Use a gun.
Even if you have a full auto weapon use it on semi auto.
Put a target in the sights before you pull the trigger.
Find another target, you can celebrate or grieve after it is over.
Use cover, movement and bullet stops to stay alive.
It is better for your enemy to die for his cause than for you to die for yours.

I respectfully disagree. Bringing a gun to a gunfight evens the odds. I'd rather have the odds in my favor. Example, "What do you use at a knife fight?" Me? A gun!

The DW and I overfilled a seven ton roll off dumpster before our move and now during the unpacking phase we look at numerous items and wonder why we did not toss this stuff also.
We have donated quite a few items to the local habitat for humanity shelters up here.

Now that being said, this concept is what others here have alluded to but with larger caliber and greater distance.

Pistol is first line defense for me. Like you quoted, for moments when confronted with an unexpected threat. Imo, a pistol is only good for that and to get me to my long gun. I try to keep my long gun within as much accessibility as possible tempered with the need to keep it secured (like in a vehicle for instance). Secure and accessible are, unfortunately, opposing forces. I do the best I can.

On the moving front, moving along swimmingly. Close on Mon. Gonna move some sensitive/fragile items myself Tues. Got movers coming Wed. Then I have to get this suburban nightmare (jk it's a nice house and shouldn't take long to sell just not my preferred environment) ready to pass on to a blissfully unaware sheeple.

Gonna take a hot minute to get set up in new place to wife's satisfaction. Who am I kidding? That'll be a years long never ending process. But gotta at least get head above water on that before I start the exponentially growing project list tumbling around in my head. Only thing I'll (hopefully) be able to do this year is get some veggies in the existing raised beds and get a couple chickens in my brothers older chicken coops he is kindly donating to the cause.

Gotta try and get a lot of this done before June. Going out to Denver to get my land consultant accreditation. Pretty excited about that. Not too many of those in my neck of the woods and I find the class subjects fascinating. Hopefully the accreditation will really help as I focus more and more of my biz on acreage. Gonna be pretty busy but if any of you are out that way might be fun to catch some grub and put a face to the forum handle .
