Preamble

In CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

The Declaration

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
 
John Adams is a direct descendant of mine, and very proud of the fact that he was one of the original signers of this important document. I've lost direct descendants in the Civil War from both the Union AND the Confederates. I've lost relatives in both WWI and well as WWII. It is days like this that I really feel the true love for this country.

I wish the younger generations would appreciate what we have, and how blessed we are.

I am not sure one can truly appreciate what we have until they have shed blood for it, lost loves ones for it, watched what it once was diminish or traveled to a place to see life without it.
 
Great day so far. I had forgotten what day it was & did a lot of normal "stuff" to keep things running. Then I woke the wife up & she reminded me. So I put out the flag & moved my car so that we could watch the parade. Yes a parade happens every year in my neighborhood & it turns right by my house. The base color guard was leading it, except for 2 police officers on motorcycles. Got to stand as the colors went by. And had the option of either a hand over the heart as they went by or saluting. (Retired military is now allowed to salute, that hasn't always been the case). My wife & I chose the hand over the heart. I don't know why except for habit from back when we couldn't salute.

Oh & just a reminder: I you have a flag out please take it down at night if it's not lighted. A flag hanging at night that isn't lighted is showing disrespect to our flag. Not everyone knows that.

I agree on all of those counts, and you don't have to go far to see it. Look at the fence along the border between Nogales Arizona and Nogales Sonora. It is as different as the light and dark side of the moon.
 
Remember in England today is just another work day. So let's rub it in. ;)

Direct ancestor? You would be his descendant.
My grandfather's brother's wife was related to the Adams family. I tried to make the connection between her and the Adams, but never did.
 
Today I’m thinking of my 4th Great Grandfather who joined the Army in July 1775, just one month after it was founded.
He was a Private in the 30th Regiment and survived the war.
I too served in combat, and suffered privations, but nothing anything like the Revolutionary War soldiers suffered.

I wish more Americans could visit Third World hell holes so they could see how Blessed by God they actually are.

And I truly don’t take it for granted that I was born an American, and not a goat herder in Outer Mongolia.
